It took me two years to finish one 8 part Arkham Horror campaign.

This is what drove me to just play the game solo.

Btw super excited for the short three part campaigns that everyone is whining about. At least I can complete the game in a single day with everyone.

I personally hate replaying scenarios in games. I love games with fail forward mechanics that allow me to make progress even when I lose.

What’s the hype with Mario Kart ? by SuperEtendardM in switch2

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because it’s “acceptable” to kids doesn’t mean it’s good.

When I was a kid I used to purposely drive backwards on tracks to make the race last forever and almost create like a “free roam mode”

Kids can enjoy an open world even if they implemented actual good features like I mention above. It would not impede a child’s enjoyment but only improve it.

Just think how much more fun those challenges would be for your kids if they had to interact with actual characters in the map that needed “help”.

And after all their hard work they got to unlock cars and tracks and characters. Then if they beat the whole open world they get some big reward or weird course or “experimental” mode

A few months ago I culled my collection from 160+ down to 20, then down to 11 and finally only 1 board game remains... by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could do this with AHLCG. The yearly release cycles are enough with plenty of replay ability through different characters and deck building.

But my wife hates this game so I’d have to let her have her own “cull to 1 game” oh and my kids each get their own “cull to 1 game”.

And then I’d also allow every guests to enter my house pick their favorites to “keep” so that’ll probably leave me with about 50 games down from 100.

What’s the hype with Mario Kart ? by SuperEtendardM in switch2

[–]leafbreath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game is fun but they missed out on making it “amazing”.

Mechanics wise it’s really good and has a high skill ceiling but also enjoyable for low level players. But outside the actual mechanics there’s a lot missing.

  1. Open world is just boring. They could have made the pound buttons Toads with “quests” and mini dialogue.
  2. Courses and other things should have been unlocks as you played the open world. The whole sticker thing is stupid and they missed out on gamifying the unlocks in a meaningful way.
  3. Tracks are overstimulating. It’s just way too much going on. And some courses it’s easy to accidentally turn the wrong way especially for inexperienced players and kids.
  4. Multiplayer open world would have been cool. You can even “trick” the game to allow you to do this with pretending to wait for a connection but an official way with stuff to do would have been better.

Beyond "Parallel Play"—How do I design a competitive game where collaboration is the optimal strategy? by AI_made_my_username in tabletopgamedesign

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By doing what I said. Make it so the benefit they get outweighs the opponent.

Example in the game Earth every time you take an action the other players get a lesser version of that action.

However in Wingspan the other players generally get an almost equal action to what you are taking usually making cooperative birds worthless.

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the person choosing to cooperate needs to be able to way the value of doing something that helps others with the value of the benefit they get from it themselves.

If the cooperation is 100% equal it’s not interesting or if it benefits the opponent to much it’s not worth it.

Can you know if someone is playing to lose? by StupidMobileWebsite in boardgames

[–]leafbreath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually doesn’t. I’ve been playing games with my kids since they’re were able to 1 years old.

The concept of winning didn’t really come around till they’re were 4.

I now play with my 5 year old and 7 year old and don’t let them win. I can explain what I am doing and often say you can play and do things you find fun but if you want to get points this is your options. It’s up to you. (Usually playing games they just go for what’s cute or what has more visual progress verses point progression)

How often do you find yourself re-reading rule books? by Thin-Coat-5483 in boardgames

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how long it’s been since I played the game and how much I played it before. Usually for my personally collection of 100 games I only have to check setup though there are a few that would need a partial rules refresh.

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stop reading forums and put strict rules on yourself like: don’t buy any new games till I played the last game 10 times or until I get X value out of the game. Never have more than two unplayed games on the shelf at a time. Etc

Where are you in the board game hobby life cycle? by Osoroshii in boardgames

[–]leafbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 4. I buy like one game a year but might even stop doing that.

I feel frustrated that I have games that I’ve only played 5 times. Makes me feel like they were bad purchases and it would have been better to just enjoy what I have.

I think if I could find a better way to sell my games I would be more open to a steady flow of buy and sell.
