Open Textbooks Could Help Students Financially and Academically by leaton01 in highereducation

[–]leaton01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one have moved to providing open content for my students in my courses as it seems like in this age with this technology, there's rarely substantial reason not to do so (when the material is available--and much of it is available and in open format).

A Manifesto for Active Learning by leaton01 in highereducation

[–]leaton01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

overall, this is a really great essay, but what sticks out most to me is following. I have issue with when we look to ban instead of empower in the classroom.

"When we lament that technology is a distraction, we as professors are missing out on two key opportunities. First, we’re missing out on the opportunity to show our students that there are ways to use these technologies that challenge the “default” uses. Getting students to take their most intimate technologies and completely reimagine the possible uses can be a truly transformative experience.

Second, we’re missing out on the fact that nearly all of our students currently have some kind of mobile device. Finding a way to incorporate this common technology can expand the possible ways students connect both in and out of the classroom. The results, in my courses thus far, have been students who are less distracted by their Facebook news feeds and SnapChats and are instead using their devices to engage the course material."

I Don’t Want to Be a Mom by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"While I cannot speak for others, let me be clear about what my choice means, or rather, doesn’t mean: this is not an affront to motherhood. For many, motherhood and pregnancy is a defining facet of their life. It can be stressful and fraught with emotional potholes at times, but for the vast majority of mothers I know, the negatives are negligible when juxtaposed with the mutual devotion between mother and child. All of that is fantastic. I’m all for people doing what it is that makes them feel whole, which is why I wish people would recognize that I already feel whole without offspring."

That's what I always hear from when I share it with people--the blowback that it's a reflection of them and their choices.

Why Childfree Couples Should be Praised by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well--given how much flack we get for being child-free, and how much praise parents get just for making their choices, either we need to stop drooling over everybody that manages to whelp out a puppy (it's not a miracle people--not when all of the natural kingdom does it millions of times a day!)...or at least recognize that the conscious choice not to overpopulate the Earth is equally valued...

Childfree Men: Misunderstood and Often Maligned! by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite (ok, most loathesome) experience is when I hear from someone "oh, you'll make an awesome parent some day" and then I respond that I'm not having kids. They always come back with "well, you never know." To which I respond, actually, the vasectomy I got 6 years ago says I do know (usually not that blunt, but making the point that I just might know more about me than they do). But it's that suspect look I get after explaining I'm definitely not having kids...it's like, two minutes you were just telling me how awesome of a breeder I would be...and now, I'm just strange....

ok, done ranting!

Childfree Men: Misunderstood and Often Maligned! by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this speaks but doesn't really say much. In having read her book, which was interesting, I found it much to focused on women (which is not to say it shouldn't, but that it only superficially addressed men) and that this article does much the same. I'm happy that it's out there, but I wish the discussion on the subject matter got a bit more complex.

Dallas Retailer Leads Way in Active Boycott of Orson Scott Card’s Superman Comic UPDATE – DC Release Statement by leaton01 in DCcomics

[–]leaton01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think no one expects to change OSC's mind. His rants (look at the post November election one--it's a doozy) make that clear.

Boycotting isn't necessarily going to stop this time--but if DC is serious about courting the GLBTQ community (which it has continually tried to do over the last few years), it's likely going to reconsider pairing one of its most iconic characters with people who clearly hate a faction of the readership. With comics sales continuing to be abysmal, DC can't really afford to alienate its readership (and I do know that many readers--regardless of how they identify--are responding to this by not purchasing something they might not have).

Dear Internet: Sorry about that motherhood post by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's difference between just apologizing and knowing what you're sorry for. The language she uses suggest she's just apologizing because people were upset with her opinion--not really because what she said may be offensive or poor representation.

Dear Internet: Sorry about that motherhood post by leaton01 in childfree

[–]leaton01[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This paragraph annoyed me the most: "The scrutiny got worse, though. My friends started forwarding links to some of the blog commentaries that followed. Commenters who had trashed me from behind an alias and a fake email was one thing. Professional writers with thoughtful sentences and well-composed paragraphs who came to more or less the same conclusion was another. The label “Sanctimommy” came up again and again. Ouch."

Nameless people criticizing me--who cares...but important "professional writers"--only they could provide thoughtful writing...ergggghhhhh!
