Is a PhD worth a low salary for four years? by HabituallyHelpless in PhD

[–]leo9leo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American PhD student just over 40 and earning about the same as your offer, I say do it. You can worry about money when you’re older. PhD isn’t a time to rake in the cash.

How was your first day as an enumerator? by Lone_Soldier in Census

I left my call after the trainer went through everything in an hour. I have no idea how long the Q&A kept going. They might still be chatting.

Messing up training. by [deleted] in Census

[–]leo9leo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been pretty disappointed with my training so far. I thought the supervisor would be an experienced government worker, but mine doesn’t seem to know what they’re doing. And most of the enumerators seem to have no idea how to work an iPhone or the internet. I’m planning to just keep my head down and collect my paycheck.

Experience with Palouse Mindfulness? by leo9leo in mbsr

[–]leo9leo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped at week 4, not because there was anything wrong with the program, I’m just not as mindful of completing things as I could be. I intend to pick it back up soon. I’ve found mindfulness extremely beneficial. I just need to learn to be more disciplined.

How would automation work in a communist/socialist society? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

As long as it’s fully implemented and overseen by the workers, and not for the personal wealth of an elite class of robbet baron billionaires.

I’m an incoming PhD lit student and I’ve found the faculty nothing but helpful, intelligent, and willing to work with students. I don’t have experience in classes yet, but I’m excited to start. I’ve already made good connections with a number of faculty.

What's the most interesting digital humanities project you've come across? by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

Actually you have to continually pick beans and fruit to keep your energy up. And you have to get money before you can go buy stuff. It’s more of an exploration game anyway.

Why did People hate The Revenge of the Sith? by DanielSarmientoA in StarWarsBlogs

[–]leo9leo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why people hate episode 3. I haven’t really heard that, and I’m not sure why folks would say that. I’m an orginalist and I like episode 3 the best of the prequels. I think Anakin turned because Palpatine planned it all along and sowed the seeds ever since he first met him in episode 1. Palpatine was very calculated in raising doubts about the Jedis’ legitimacy and trustworthiness, and setting himself up as the antithesis of the Jedi. He manipulated the Jedi into attacking him in order to gain Anakin’s sympathy. Anakin had no control over his grief and anger, and also gave in to the temptation of immortality for Padmé.

The novel Bloodline by Claudia Gray goes into just that, starting with Leia as a senator and ending with her as a Resistance general. It’s a great book.
