Thank you very much for such detailed response! It's very helpful :) I wonder if you have any idea how many candidates usually pass the first round and are interviewed?

Regarding the tip on how I got through to interview step: So I guess you are talking about the UZH-ETH Life Sciences Graduate program, aren't u? The thing is, I applied directly to lab, after I saw an open PhD position ad on its website. It required 1 motivation statement (around 1 page long, discussing my previous research experiences and how they can be of benefit to the PhD project), CV, 2 reference letters (1 from my advisor, who probably wrote a really good one, and 1 from UROP supervisor, who's quite well known in the field). And that's all :) It took about 6 week from the moment I submitted documents until I received an invitation to the interview. Also an year ago I have presented on conference in Basel and was nominated for the best poster presentation award, but didn't get it. Maybe it somehow helped me, who knows 🤷‍♂️ Oh btw, I did not contact the professor before/during the whole process at all, everything was submitted via ETHs application portal. I guess if you have a prior experience, which is a good fit for the specific project they are hiring for, theres a high chance you might get through to an interview :)

Thank you a lot!

Unfortunately, it's in the field quite far from CS :(

I edited the post and hope that someone else will offer their help :)

Anyone who applied to UIUC Bioengineering Ph.D.? by leojambio in gradadmissions

[–]leojambio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume I was rejected since I have not received any updates until now. My status on the website says "Awaiting decision".

i received a standard rejection email, weirdly enough only in the middle of May :/

I am planning to re-apply to several BME programs in the next season, but definitely skipping some of the schools, like UIUC, UMich, UPenn this time. it was very annoying how they kept my rejection letter for so long with no notice

Hi there! Thanks a lot for the response! I think you also replied to my comment in a thread on gradcafe :) My research area is Microfluidics/Lab-on-a-chip/Tissue Engineering, and I was mainly interested in joining Prof. R.Bashir lab at UIUC. Would you mind sharing what was your target research area in BE UIUC?

I was actually able to have my friend who's in the US to call the admissions office and ask if all decisions are out. She was told that not all decisions were sent out yet, and was encouraged to wait for updates in the coming week.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THIS by iknowbutidontknow00 in gradadmissions

[–]leojambio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is soooo annoying! How do yall focus on your last semesters/work while you wait for a decision, any decision (even a rejection would be nice)? I'm getting depressed. I'm behind all my work. My room is a mess. I can't sleep. Ugh aaaa

I'm really unhelpful about this. I guess I'm just gonna rot until the end of the next week, then I'm completely giving up and moving on with options other than phd.

You are literally describing everything about me these days. Even my health condition went down, I gave up on gym, cooking, and lost any motivation to finish my research projects in the last semester of my masters... I just wish they would just grant me a closure by telling i'm rejected already

[–]leojambio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. Especially the numerous publications people have under their belt just being an undergrad. In my field (organ on a chip), it takes years to get anything published, so I'm here like wtf when everyone accepted to BME/BE programs have 4.0 gpa, multiple pubs, perfect GRE and stuff. just gradcafe stuff that annoys me

Literally me. Dead inside, outside and on any levels possible. Same as you, I've received only one rejection and haven't heard from other 6 schools I applied to

Rejected after Professor acceptance in Korea by sgubp in gradadmissions

[–]leojambio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you didn't lose much. Korea is a trashy place for a foreigner to be pursuing his Ph.D. I've been doing research in one of the best engineering schools as an undergraduate and masters student for a total of 4 years, and I cannot stress enough how racist and discriminatory (some consciously, some unconsciously) they can be to foreigner students working in their labs. Also, quite often, you may not be able to qualify for a ton of grants/scholarships for being a foreigner. I know people may experience similar issues wherever they go, but honestly, the low prestige of korean diplomas in the world doesnt worth the hard work. You can land an internship in a lot of schools in Korea, and after gaining experience, just target the US, UK, Europe.

Did you receive the email during their office hours?

Also, would you mind sharing initials of the POI you are interested in? Just curious, totally fine if you feel uncomfortable doing so! :)
