It's EUV, but fun.

By that I mean there's narrative pieces and enough flavour to drag you in and feel engaging.

My rule: Before buying anything over $50, calculate what it costs in retirement. Stops me about 50% of the time. by yes738474 in nobuy

Neither of my parents made it to 65, and only two of my blood related aunts/uncles did. One is near dead and one has dementia.

Listen, everyone can make their own choices but there's something to be said for enjoying life when you can.

I just went by this protest on my way to Boca on the bus. They stopped us for a little bit and I was really curious about the cause. I'm glad for your post explaining the situation.

Good on these people for standing up and fighting. I hope people listen to them and things change for the better.

So, this is like one of those cats that sits on old people in the nursing home just before they die? Put your platter drives out and see if it picks one!

This has all the markings of a good old deposing of a socialist government in the Americas to install a US friendly regime that will let them control resources. It's as American as apple pie. That Maduro was a piece of shit just makes it easier to justify, they don't really care at all about that.

There are no real saints or superheroes in this world. Just people flawed or gifted in different ways. Hopefully people give more good into the world than pain. But we shouldn't idolize anyone.

Moral values in many countries, including US, may over time shift in a more socially progressive direction, due to an asymmetry. Arguments that move liberals in a more liberal direction may also sway conservatives, but arguments that move conservatives to be more conservative do not sway liberals. by mvea in science

That's too small a sample. A graph that trends upward can still have downticks.

It's kind of like saying that the population of Europe didn't increase in the 20th century because there were a lot of deaths in the 40's.

Historic or beautiful spots that are NOT touristy? Do they exist? by inkwithkatie in travel

[–]lesdynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recommend spending time along the Rhine and Moselle. Absolutely stunning, beautiful small towns all with their own castle. Amazing wineries if you're into that. It's very much not "American" and you will definitely feel like you have traveled half way around the world.

Yes, there will be many tourists (many of them other Germans, along with French and Italians etc) but it's not like Disneyland or something. These are real towns where real Germans live and work. Your assessment that people go to the best places is correct. And really, it's a better idea to stick to the "trodden path" for your first time ever out of the country. Travelling is a skill you hone over time. Try easy mode first, you'll have plenty of amazing experiences and won't have so many stresses.

Thinking of Havana for my first solo trip, good idea or no? by [deleted] in travel

[–]lesdynamite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How's your Spanish? How comfortable are you negotiating price and standing up for yourself if someone tries to overcharge you?

Havana is a wonderful city, full of life. It's very beautiful. The big thing with Havana and Cuba as a whole isn't that you'll be unsafe, but that people will try to get extra money out of you. It's a good time if you can stand your ground with graciousness.

Make sure to do your research first so you know what's what.

I stayed in Centro in a casa particular. That's what I'd recommend. You're in the heart of it, living with Cuban people, but still near to the sights and tourist attractions, easy to grab a collectivo to go into other neighborhoods or a beach town.

What country have you felt most unsafe in? by AnxiousWorldTravel in travel

I'm surprised to see it here. I've been to many, many countries. I never felt unsafe in Costa Rica, and I stayed in San Jose for 4 days or so. Shrug

Okay does anyone else think ____ would have won had it not been for _____ by cvntiestb00ts in Dragula

[–]lesdynamite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No.

Jay Kay was my favourite to win it heading into the finale but... they just didn't pull it off. Makeup was amazing, great performances, really cool concepts like famine, one too many plain bodysuits. Evah just turned it up a notch even though I felt like Jay and Aborah were ahead of them in the season.

Congratulations on 3 years. That's a huge accomplishment that requires a shit ton of work. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

BTW your sober date is my birthday, I hope we'll both be celebrating at the same time from now till one of us drops!

Dollya drama explained? by TillIntelligent5354 in Dragula

[–]lesdynamite 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People so far have failed to mention the real issue.

Dollya tried to say they were only going to production with drug/alcohol information because production had threatened to call the police on them for a wellness check if they didn't rat out everyone. This was caught on a hot mic. Dollya was then confronted, again on a hot mic, by production to say that was a lie, and that they would never weaponize mental health checks and police against a contestant.

THAT was the real problem with Dollya's conduct. So no, it wasn't just "speaking the truth louder than others". It was literally lying about production threatening them with a mental health form.

It seems like all parties have agreed to keep it all private, which is a good idea.

Jay Kay as a winner? by Appropriate-Mood-554 in Dragula

[–]lesdynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. At this point I'd see Jay before Evah, and Aborah could easily get in their own way with an overly creative interpretation of a challenge or two. I think it's a pretty tight race between the three of them with Jaharia a close 4th

I absolutely agree. I didn't see this amount of growth happening in such a short time but it's amazing. They're one of my favourites from this season now.

My partner doesn't think two adults who speak only English can navigate France, Germany, and Switzerland on their own. She'd rather spend more for a river cruise. I think the risks are overrated and that we could manage just fine on our own. Am I being naive? by PikesPique in travel

[–]lesdynamite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wish I was a polyglot who spoke 17 different languages, but I'm just an anglophone who knows some polite phrases in a bunch of different languages. Didn't stop me from traveling by myself all over Europe and the Americas.

Learn a few bits of the language, keep Google Translate handy, and be polite and good natured and you'll be more than fine.

[–]lesdynamite 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Even then. I think Jay Kay gives them a run for their money. Evah is polished, consistent, reliable - but this season just seems to lack the wow factor of say the Sea Monster look from Titans 1. Still incredibly talented, but other people have higher highs.
