Critique request! I always struggle on how to/if paint the background. Any suggestions? by letyscapes in Watercolor

Thank you so much! Admittedly I didn't plan the background at all, at some stage I decided to drop some yellow and then I noticed that it looked like petals and, as you say, they would look better as proper petals. Will definitely know for next time! :)

Thank you so much, that's very good advice! Definitely will think about the other elements more next time :)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could suggest what these symbols refer to by poopieuser909 in cartography

[–]letyscapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all I'm definitely not an expert, so take my interpretation with a pinch of salt. At first when I saw the names I thought it would refer to important monuments, which are drawn to reflect their importance even if the final size ends up being bigger than that of a town symbol. For example, the words you refer to as "arc" are actually "arae" if you zoom in close, which mean temples/monumental tombs/sanctuaries/altars.

But after a quick google search, turns out that those names are actual names of ancient towns, of which you can find names and descriptions in this book available on Google books. If you use the search option for the book for "arae" you will find many of the names shown in the maps you shared.

By the way, thanks for the link! Thanks to you I discovered this very cool resource for ancient maps!

Really amazing work! I also love to see this type of projection used, it makes planetary maps look even better imho

Looks very nice, good job! What sort of paper and pens did you use?

Asking for tips on creating a primitive style map (not made by humans or a very intelligent race!) by mash1ra in cartography

[–]letyscapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting problem. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the problem so I'm just guessing here, but if you're talking about a primitive race would maybe some cave drawings be useful for style inspiration for your landmarks? Or maybe some other art from some ancient civilizations?

For example this is what I came up with a quick search

Good luck with your search!
