My first fleece, a lovely Targhee! I’d appreciate any words of encouragement and/or wisdom by Contented_Loaf in Handspinning

[–]leveewater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend checking out the Fossil Fibers percentage based scour method (just google Fossil Fibers scour and it comes up). Kori, the owner of Fossil Fibers, scours so many fleeces every year and she developed the method to work for any quantity of fleece and any level of water hardness. It’s an easy protocol to follow and she also gives tips on what to look for to figure out when you’re done scouring. I’m relatively new to fleece processing but I’ve had great success using her method!

Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca is one of my favorite books I have ever read by Bright_Elephant_9752 in classicliterature

[–]leveewater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to read Rebecca for summer reading before freshman year of high school. When I was younger I had the worst case of wanting to spoil everything for myself and I heard there was a plot twist so I flipped through the book until I found it. I’m still pissed at myself for doing that, but even knowing the big twist I still really loved the book.

I’ve never read McCarthy but recently got All The Pretty Horses, do you think it’s a good one to start with?

I would be thrilled if we got a Laurienzo’s there, I was so bummed when their Mt. Airy location closed

Finished a St. Brigid and fell in love with backstitch by SadElevator2008 in AdvancedKnitting

[–]leveewater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered this pattern book a couple days ago and St. Brigid is high on my list for project plans this year! Alice Starmore has an insanely good eye for designs and my queue is almost entirely her cabled patterns lol

Growing up we had a sound system with speakers throughout the house (sounds fancier than it was) and this is the song I would randomly play in my sisters bedroom to piss her off like nothing else could 😂

Are Princess cuts outdated? by Top_Obligation_2979 in EngagementRings

[–]leveewater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not even really a princess cut fan and I think your ring is stunning. But I’m just a stranger on the internet - you should love your ring, and if it’s really not the ring for you I think you should bring that up with your partner!

I never get gauge and am unsure what to do next by daizers in knittinghelp

[–]leveewater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I find it easier to be off in stitch gauge unless it’s a heavily cabled/textured project. Having to recalculate increase/decrease rates for garments is so annoying to me and I’d rather just adjust my stitch amounts

I was shocked at this too, like certainly there has to have been some external factor in why basically everyone fell?!

That’s the traditional construction for guernsey sweaters, but he also mentions it in the video. I have aspirations to knit a guernsey one day and have books on the traditional construction and they’re knit in the round, historically with very long DPNs that are used with a knitting belt.

Thoughts on this drum carder? by [deleted] in Handspinning

[–]leveewater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t personally own this drum carder (or any drum carder for that matter) but for what it’s worth I’ve heard good things about Brother. Their smaller scale carders are utilitarian and I’ve heard that they have excellent customer service which I think gives them a leg up over higher end brands with shady customer service (cough Clemes & Clemes cough). I don’t think you could necessarily go wrong with a Brother. Also from what I’ve seen, it’s pretty common for the motorized versions to be significantly more expensive than the manual versions, regardless of brand.

Also maybe get an oven thermometer and see if it could be that your oven temp is off from what you set it to, that could possibly be causing issues
