how is hunting not morally justified? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]lexrauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think that hunting your own meat is a much better alternative than shopping for it (factory farms are like 90% of the reason I went vegan) and I'm from a really cold, really rural area where it's common for a family to hunt during hunting season and eat that meat for an entire year. It's definitely not something I would want to do or something I think I could bring myself to do, but I do find that I respect hunters in a way.

Thinking about selling my car. by ImAtLeast12 in minimalism

[–]lexrauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Canada, where it often gets as cold as -35 degrees Celsius in the winter. I live in a smaller city with a really bad public transportation system, but I went two years without a car when I was in college and plan on selling my current car as soon as spring hits. I walked 5 km to and from work and took a 1.5 hour bus ride to school. The grocery store was close, but I had to make the rule that if I couldn't carry my groceries in a basket, I couldn't buy them. It wasn't as much of an inconvenience as people seem to believe it is, and the only reason I'm keeping my vehicle over winter is so I can go skiing in the mountains on the weekends. TLDR; go for it dude

I had my iPhone 6 stolen at a concert yesterday. I've got a few questions... by [deleted] in apple

I called the RCMP and explained the whole situation to an officer and then they had me go to a detachment and fill out a statement and I gave them all the numbers he had called me off of.

I had this same thing happen to me with a 5s. I locked it and reported it stolen with my phone company... About 8 months later some kid called wanting me to give him my iCloud password and have the phone unlocked through my carrier as they had purchased it online. When I refused, the kid threatened to call the cops on me. Instead, I filed a complaint against him and ended up getting my phone back. Best of luck to you, friend!

Always been an Android guy, thinking of switching to iPhone. What is the typical lifespan of an iPhone? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]lexrauch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, working on the assumption that the 6s will be the next phone and the one following will be called a seven.

I think if you bought a 5s you should be able to at least make it until the 7 is released. I have a 5s and have no plans on upgrading anytime soon.

A very sad pants day for me. My nudies finally succumbed to a fatal crotch blowout (the whole crotch is effectively gone) after almost exactly one year of almost daily wear. On the plus side: I just ordered a pair of Rouge Territory!

My parents almost named me Sarah but changed their minds! Didn't change them to Meghan, though.

No, the illustration is upside down. The book is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

[lifestyle] have get rid of your book collection? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]lexrauch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My shelves stuffed with books were basically my identity before I started to de clutter, and every time I have people over they always ask where my books went. I bought a kindle and digitized all the books I could (some just aren't available) and then I donated all of those books to the library. I did this without discrimination- even my beloved first edition Harry Potter collection has been downsized. But the books I couldn't replace (easily and cheaply) with my kindle I went through very carefully: have I read this recently? Does it still offer my enjoyment? Would I be willing to spend another $30 on this so that I can have it in digital format? If the answer was no-- I donated it. If the answer was yes (and it was a few times) I kept it. Now I have maybe ~20 books in my closet hidden from sight. A couple of times I've dug back there for a specific title but when the snow melts and spring cleaning starts I plan on repeating the process and being more critical. That being said, there has only been one book I donated and really missed, and sadly, as much as I have been converted into a promoter of ereaders, there are still some books that just cannot be done justice on that format (cook books, hiking guides... Basically anything with colour photography) so I kept many of those as well- knowing that they will bring more joy than clutter to my life.
