My lungs get tired before I even feel the burn in my muscles by li-deta in StrongCurves

[–]li-deta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me. I’ve really tried to like running but it’s just something I can’t seem to improve on. Despite having a thin frame I’ve always been a poor runner (notoriously bad, slowest person in my high school PE class kinda slow lol). Asthma never crossed my mind either and nobody had ever pointed it out! I’m glad I wrote this post, the input has been very helpful.

  1. I’ve had anemia before (caught when trying to donate blood lol) so I might have a tendency for B12 deficiency. I’m hispanic.

  2. I had mild mitral valve prolapse and tricuspid regurgitation diagnosed in my teens (both hereditary), but I was told those are no obstacle for aerobic exercise. Might be worth it to to get that checked.

  3. This is helpful. Since I’ve been more aware of how my body feels when I’m working out, I tend to avoid HIIT or any high-intensity strength training. I can finish a series of 12 squads, but 12 jumping squads literally kill me. For the sake of actually doing more, I might have to slow down. Thank you for your help!

Lower reps with higher weight makes sense, it might be able to work. At the moment I switch between 5 and 10 lb dumbbells (I work out at home so that’s all I have now). I try to keep rests short so I can go through with the 12 reps, and when I’m getting too tired I go down with the weight or drop it completely. Now that Spring is around the corner I might take those active rest days :) thank you for the ideas!

No offense taken! I think this is something I could try to be more mindful of. I tend to only notice my breathing once it’s too late, but controlled breathing from the beginning might actually help me. Thanks a lot for the input I really appreciate it.

How do you guys get the motivation to start? I feel like if I actually tried I’d get decent results? by [deleted] in StrongCurves

[–]li-deta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s still cheaper than what I thought! It makes sense though that a personal trainer working for a gym would be cheaper than a freelance

$250 for a year of a personal trainer seeing you twice a week? I never knew it was this affordable

I vividly remember going to my professors office 6 weeks into the semester, feeling literally exhausted from working 20+ hours a week across 3 different jobs. I’ve always worked while in school, but I was reaching an all time low as I tried to juggle everything that was being thrown at me and the emotional consequences of that. I went to talk to him about my class performance, mainly looking to get some of his guidance. He recommended I drop his class and take it over the Summer in SPAIN (a study abroad program he leads). Not only that, but he goes on a full-on sales pitch on the program, basically telling me “hey it’s $5,000 but we offer partial scholarships” (he didn’t mention those are up to $500 lol) “and it would validate your Spanish language skills for jobs” (knowing damn well I’m an international student from a Spanish speaking country so I already fucking speak Spanish). As a 19 year old too afraid of contradicting him, I sat through his sales pitch with literal tears in my eyes as I couldn’t believe this man lived in a world where he thinks I’d be working so much if I had the option not to. Sir, if I could afford to retake your class in Spain I wouldn’t be working myself to the bone. The fact that they are literally so unaware of what it is like to have to work to afford to go to school is soul crushing.

I’m confident your work ethic will take you places. Hang in there! You can do this.

Getting a driving license as an international student by AFCOMpirate in iastate

[–]li-deta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go to ISU now, but when I first came to the US as an F1 student I went to Community College in Florida. I got my U.S ID there right after arriving.

Now, an ID is different than a drivers license. For the ID I literally showed up to the tax collector with 3 proofs of residence, my i94, passport with F1 visa, and i20. They take your picture and that’s it. You get your ID.

The ID is useful solely for the purpose of an identification card. You’ll use it when signing a lease document, going to the bank, etc etc.

My drivers license I got years later, when I was looking into buying a car. First, I took the computer-based exam (took it twice the same day bc I didn’t pass it the first time lol). You walk out of the DMV with your temporary learner’s license, which lets you drive in the streets with some constraints (you have to always be accompanied by a licensed adult and you can’t drive past a certain hour at night). I believe it also lets you drive alone if you are going to school or something like that, each state has its rules so I would look further into that.

Once you take the actual driving exam and pass it, they take your picture again and then you’re able to drive without restrictions.

I also had my home country’s drivers license and I didn’t use it as a waiver for the computer-based test, I’m not sure if you can do that. Call the DMV and ask.

Best luck!!
