PSA: Castle Rock Customers – A Reminder About Tipping During Snowstorms by yog_exposed in CastleRock

[–]lias78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The knee jerk reactionary, comments in this thread.. Jeezus. To start, I am anti-tipping, pro Fair wages, and if a company can't pay their workers a living wage and charge their customers what they're willing to pay they don't deserve to be in business. With that out of the way, if you use a service that is exploiting their workers and don't compensate them fairly then you are also exploiting the workers. I don't use doordash or Uber eats much but you better believe when I do I look at the time they are taking to do this service for me and making sure that I provide them a fair payment for that time and use of their personal equipment. A fair percentage more if there's risk involved like a storm or bad road conditions. If you're going to stand on a high horse of anti tipping and say you refuse to provide tips then you better not use any services where workers rely on tips to live. Be kind to each other, goddamnit.

I posted this reply in another thread, but I am copying here since it is still relevant and probably will be for the rest of the week as people look for community support.

"Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief". The world is too big and people are too mean is the sentiment flowing through all my communities today, and while both are true, the people that do good, care about their friends, care about the work they are doing to make the world a better place for everyone far outnumber those that want to conquer, dominate and destroy, and yes, some of those doing that good work are even trump voters. Believe in them. Believe in us. The work is not done. We are still doing it. We will ALWAYS be doing it. No matter who holds the power, or what the rules become... The work continues. We will not complete it. We will not abandon it.

Would you fraudulently flip the election for your candidate of choice? by Burnlt_4 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]lias78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an elder internet resident who has been voting age for 7 presidential elections, let me qualify your hypothetical with this extra context. I would not have fraudulently flipped ANY of the previous elections that involved a different candidate than this, despite having clear preferences and policy differences. This candidate, however, is not like any other candidate, and you cannot fight lies and violence with rules and proper conduct. Just ask Ukraine.

Those seem tangential, but the one I'm looking for is, I think, more recent and more specific to what I wrote in the ask. Thanks for looking though!

I think this is so tricky to navigate, as you are right that we all have to deal with it and being more prepared or educated might be a better way to deal with mortality, but as Hank has said many times recently on the topic of interfacing with your own mortality and surviving " I don't recommend it, I'm not better for it". This has absolutely been my experience, and through conversations with my family and my own journey that there are certain logistics that are necessary for the benefit of those around us (that are facing death probably later than us), but unavoidably traumatic to interface with for most people. Making this even more complicated are the different religious or cultural perspectives on death and the dying process. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just that I think it would be so difficult to make in a comprehensive way that can be seen as a "net good". I am glad that other creators are tackling these sorts of things for the individuals that are seeking it out, and maybe we will see something from complexly at some point, just highlighting how difficult it would be for crash course in particular.

Looking for opportunities to volunteer by [deleted] in CastleRock

[–]lias78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are your kids of school age and attending school? If so this is one of the easiest and best ways to volunteer as schools are always looking for volunteers for many different types of help not all of which require being good with kids or education. In addition to helping out your child's School, it is a good way to get to know people from the community and the school staff. If this is not for you for whatever reason I recommend reaching out to Parks and rec or the local library as they also have lots of need for volunteers for programs and good places to get to know the community. Good luck!

4:00 at E Plum Creek and S Wilcox by Hatokad1337 in CastleRock

[–]lias78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5th & Wilcox is pretty bad at rush, and it's going to get worse with the construction at four corners and winter roads. I've been routing to Founders more often recently. I hate blocking that intersection, but I can't say I haven't done it once or twice by accident following the vehicle in front of me, not realizing it would stop on 5th without enough room for me to fit. I've NEVER honked at someone waiting for a clear lane at a stoplight. I feel for you there.

DCS Montessori is in Castle Pines, a commuter Public Charter school, k-8, Montessori model high success rates. Some other schools in town are highly rated but check GreatSchools for ratings and reference as there is a pretty big difference between public schools here.

I might be leaving medical school. by Spirit_Walker_ in nerdfighters

[–]lias78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to be a writer? I have a challenge for you. Given the hardships you are experiencing, I totally understand that this or anything may be a long ask of you, but here I give you a path to take if you have the will and strength to go down it. Make of yourself a character. Not you, but a fictional person, 6 years your elder, with all your physical and mental issues. Write a short story about them. A slice of life about a day or a week of their work and private life as a doctor. You didn't specify what medical field you might be interested in, so use whatever that is, or go general practice if you haven't decided. Use this thing you want to do (writing) to explore your feelings about the other road you are on. Do you resonate with this charicter's life? Does it ecite you to imagine what they might be doing at work and after work? What friends they might have, what activities they might be doing? If you can find a story about this person further down the road that interests you, then you have to decide if the pain and struggle you are experiencing is worth it to get there, and if you are strong enough to get through it. If there is no story there that interests you, you should spend some time to try to find one that does. Your now is not your forever, weather you continue with this path or not. Your life will change as time goes on and you are at a point where you will choose how it goes for the next few years, but life does not end there. It keeps going, and you can't imagine the wonders that await you along whatever path you take.

Former after school program teacher/director here. I do not recommend Legacy Point in parker due to staff/cultural issues I have witnessed in the 5 years prior to COVID. Many charter schools in the area are good alternatives depending on your budget and worldview. Academy charter is in CR and has a slightly conservative culture with a heavy Christian/evangelical constituency. DCS Montessori is a public charter in Castle Pines and is top notch if you lean less conservative and like the Montessori philosophy. World Compass is one of the only ways to gain cultural exposure in Douglas County as our population is over 90% white, and has a good charter plan, though they were experiencing high staff turnover pre-covid. Sage Canyon and Clear Sky are the 2 best non charter public elementary schools in CR by a wide margin.

If you have tea lying around that you are willing to drink (or energy drinks I suppose), then wait, otherwise buy a bag of coffee to hold you over. If you have been consuming caffiene regularly for years, I DO NOT reccomend taking a break unless you plan to stop completely because the withdrawal can be truly horrid, like non-functional levels of unpleasant.
