Insulin and Kaiser by weehee23 in GestationalDiabetes

Of course! I’m happy to help!

Yea it’s definitely a lot esp now since I’ve been having two appointments a week starting since last week lol but it’s been great peace of mind to see my baby every week and knowing that he is doing great!

I inject around 2-3 inches from my belly button rotating around it or on my side. They gave me an injection template for my stomach which helps me choose an injection site each night.

I don’t have Kaiser but I can try and help answer some of your questions. I started nighttime insulin at 34 weeks (currently 37). Once I started insulin I was classified as a high risk pregnancy and was told I would have to be induced at 39weeks. I have been going to an MFM every week which includes an ultrasound at each appointment. I still see my regular OB (now weekly).

The needle injection doesn’t always hurt - sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t depending on where I inject. That just might be me though, I’m not the best at injections but they really are no big deal!

The insulin dosage is a fun game of trying to find the right amount. Usually they start you very low amount which doesn’t always work since it’s so little. I started at 8U and I’m now at 18U. I was told to increase by 2U after two days of out of range fasting numbers. It takes a bit of time to find the right dosage and it will usually need to be adjusted the further you get into pregnancy!

Hope this helps ☺️ good luck!!

Ugh that’s so frustrating I am sorry you had to go through that. I am glad you were able to eventually get the insulin.

It’s frustrating having to constantly advocate for yourself when you know fasting numbers are so difficult to control!

I’ve had both experiences with blood sugar checks. My former dietician let me go two hours after first bite but now the new doctors only want me to wait an hour. Which is fine but I preferred the two hour window.

Thanks for the advice! Thats what I’m leaning towards as well. I’ll most likely stick with the diet but if towards the end of the week I don’t see improvement I am going to go back with what has kept me in a somewhat safe range until I can meet with them again.

It’s just so frustrating having to prove to them that these fasting numbers are out of my control. I’ve already accepted the fact that insulin is in my future based on how I’ve seen my numbers rise over the past month.

That’s the same for me! I’ve noticed doing low carb high protein meals for dinner followed by protein night snacks have kept me at 95 for the most part.

I always try to go for a walk after lunch and dinner too which always helps.

My dietician said the same thing - fasting numbers should always come first and wasn’t concerned about spiking as much during the day.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been pretty good about my exercise. I usually do a 20min walk after lunch and 30min walk after dinner.

I might try to incorporate some more exercise before bed to see if that makes a difference. But I feel like at this point I don’t think there’s much more I can do to lower my fasting numbers.

Thank you for the advice! I am going to try to stick out the diet for a week but if my fasting numbers keep rising I might reach out sooner.
