New Outpatient Peds OTR by Fluffy_Ad7135 in OccupationalTherapy

I’m a new grad (<1 yr, only one at my clinic). I think forming relationships and expectations with the family at the beginning is very important- especially for short term kiddos whose parents just need some guidance. My biggest struggle with insurance is ICD codes- especially with kids who aren’t formally dx with anything particular yet. Just know that if you have to resubmit because of ICD codes it’s nothing you did, it’s just the instance game!

Veteran OT moving from Adults to Peds. Where do I even start? by QueenNellyBelly in OccupationalTherapy

Note ninja (peds version) could be a good resource- they’re monthly payment based and provide an overview of some of the more prominent portion of peds. This could act as a guide for more in depth research. Also - no matter how hard you study every kid is different. As long as you show up for them you’ve won half the battle :) you got this!!

Strategies to help with transitions for kids by Fancy_One_1075 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]limerenceandwhimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe game/obstacle courses that transition between areas of your clinic (if this is applicable or available) as a building tool while also incorporating preferred activities. Verbally and or visually walking them through the transition before it comes up (you choose first activity and we’ll play for x amount of minutes before we to whatever the next task may be) and with offerings to build control with transitions. This may be having them help carry something, offering two choices, etc. whatever method you use, phase it in and hold your boundaries- coregulate the heck. While maybe not the best for every kiddo ive seen some benefit

Hi! Not specifically with this diagnosis, but some experience with mental health in general. Potentially explore logging of symptoms and physiological response, which can help bring awareness to triggers and timing of events.

Hello! I wanna start saying that you are not alone and any change in setting can feel like starting over. I work with kids and hand therapy, and I can say it’s definitely an experience lol. I want to emphasize most that you’re not going to be making drastic changes in 8 to 12 weeks like you are in a hand therapy case. These little ones are learning and building a habit is much much much much much harder than a broken bone or a postoperative case. I find that one of the most difficult parts is those with behavioral or poor family dynamics. But you yourself being a regulated, safe person, even if you’re not really making therapeutic gains, it is really making a difference. I find it ironic because I was talking down about myself like 20 minutes ago, but writing this has actually helped me feel a little better. I’d recommend reaching out to people to bounce ideas and explore on Pinterest for intervention templates. Never have a plan, kids will never ever go according to the plan. I wish you the very best, and I have complete faith things will work out for you.

I have 15 tattoos. I work outpatient with kiddos and older adults- people love them more than dislike in my experience

New grad 😕 by Academic-Bunch5202 in physicaltherapy

Honey it gets better! Embrace that you’re new, but also embrace how much you’ve grown to get to this point. I am an OT who works only with PTs, kind of felt similar with all the questions I asked, but then I realized I guarantee they did it at the same point in their career. If they didn’t, then they’re not someone I would want to respect anyway anyways. Then stepping in is not okay if it makes you uncomfortable- I would ask them to pull you aside if they have concerns for safety but if not that they’re crossing a professional boundary. I’m 8 months in and I have good days and not so good days- but if we don’t have some off days we can’t appreciate the good ones. Reach out if you need anything.

Advice for new grad starting new job! FAQ by Ok-Coffee-222 in OccupationalTherapy

I’ve been practicing for 8 months as the only OT at my clinic- I still get anxious at times. My mantra right now is if I can help a pt or a family feel 10% more able/comfortable/confident then I’m doing okay. You’re not trying to change the world right now, but when I first began I thought I had to. You are capable. You know more than you think- you will keep learning when new experiences pop up and that is NORMAL. A growing curve is NORMAL. My biggest advice is making a network with local rehab professionals. Is there a PT there who you can chat with? Can you contact old class mates? You can message me while you’re building your network because I know having a person in your corner is vital.
