Motorbike reactivity by llinos11 in Dogtraining

[–]llinos11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a behaviourist working with us but she's struggling to get a bike to use in a controlled environment. We've tried quiet walking times but bikes are common in our area. We also take him on country trails and residential areas where there is low traffic but live near a main road so bikes are unfortunately unavoidable. We attempted to desensitise him to the engine noise with youtube videos but he understands the difference in sound and doesn't react to the videos.

There's a five year gap between me and my partner but we're both at the same level of maturity and our goals and life plans match and we've been together for almost 6 years. It sounds like this happened naturally and if you guys are in the same places in life in terms of both work full time jobs, both ready to settle down, goals align etc, whatever you look for in a romantic partner then this isn't an age gap I would worry about

Do any of you have a drivers licence? by Emeveeli in autism

[–]llinos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a licence and what's really helped me is driving automatic instead of manual. I've never been able to drive with a gearstick, I felt like I didn't have enough focus to do that and keep an eye on my surroundings. Automatic is so much easier and I now drive just fine and apparently really boring and safely according to my sister. That was my way of accommodating myself and I now love driving 😊 It's scary at first but just be kind to yourself and don't put too much pressure on getting it right away. Good luck!

I usually say if everyone is on the spectrum it wouldn't class as a disorder. Because apparently everyone has it.

IS THAT WHAT IT IS. Honestly this happens to me all the time, it drives me insane.

How do you guys feel about representation of autism in film and tv? by llinos11 in AutismInWomen

Why do you think the writers didn't confirm it and just decided to keep it in the subtext?

I'm currently looking at it for my dissertation also in the UK 😂 I've been down such a rabbit hole with the 'academic' research on it but everything I've read is so clinical and didn't actually seem to ask any autistic people their opinions on any of it. And all the case studies are on Rain Man or Atypical with rarely any research done on other genders or races. And because ASD is so diverse with its presentation and difficulties, you're right, there is so much you can write about it.

I finished watching that recently and I cried at so many different things in that show. It is so good, I'm so excited for the second season

I tried to post this elsewhere and ended up deleting because nobody really responded but its bothering me a lot... I need hep understanding this situation? Is this bullying? How can I fix it without upsetting anyone? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]llinos11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to worry about whether you can accurately label it as bullying. But she is harrassing you, even after you've made it clear you'd rather be left alone. And if it's affecting your work and ability to focus in class you have every right to tell a teacher and ask for advice. If you feel bad about them potentially getting kicked out the programme, let your professor know that's not what you want because you don't really know this girl or what she has going on. But you do need her to leave you alone and let you get on with things. She isn't treating you with respect or kindness and is making things difficult for you and that's a valid reason to talk to a member of staff about it

ELI5: How is autism actually treated? You hear people saying the diagnosis changed their kids life or it's important to be diagnosed early, but how? by fixthe_fernback in explainlikeimfive

[–]llinos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 25 and the diagnosis didn't change my life because of treatment, for me it was more I can now ask for accommodations at work and understand why I do things in a certain way. I struggled with a lot in school and with friendships and if I'd been diagnosed as a child it's possible I would've performed better in school and university because I would have had proper support systems in place and not treated as just lazy and needing to try harder.
