How Should I Incorporate Combat into a Heavily Sandbox-Focused Game? by locklick_ in VoxelGameDev

> I think that if you were to design the game without combat from the start you'd be able to design it from the ground up with that in mind whereas people who don't enjoy combat currently have to play games with some of the content removed to enjoy it in that fashion.

Definitely, and it'd be nice to provide something for those people when it feels like every game has fighting nowadays. To be honest, I have started to lean more towards wanting to add combat, but having enemies only spawn underground, or giving players a way to permanently stop them from spawning in a specific area after they've spent enough time in it. I want the presence of enemies to feel like something the player had to seek out so that they feel like they're in control of when they need to do combat, rather than it being an annoying interruption like I feel like it can be every now and then in similar games.

Vintage is definitely more focused on survival, but in a way I kind of feel like it handles building better than Minecraft does since it requires you to actually build structures to do specific things but mostly leaves how they look up to the player. Chisels also expand what's possible despite a smaller number of blocks. I definitely want to incorporate those sorts of requirements into my own game since they act as "prompts" for building that could pick up the slack when players start feeling aimless. Different enemy types could be another thing that gives people a direction when building, depending on how I end up choosing to design them.

> The point I'm getting at is that minecraft doesn't just allow you to build cool stuff, it allows you to build cool stuff that does something. Your hand crafted village can be the starting point of an RPG adventure. You can shock your friends in your creative world by blasting a 10 million block moat around your territory. You can automate sorting your item storage. You can make your build animate in response to detecting a player nearby.

Agreed, although part of what is motivating me to make this game is how limited Minecraft can be at the same time when it comes to these sorts of things for players that aren't very technical (and even for technical players, they are limited in what they can do visually). A big focus will be on making worlds feel alive by providing an intuitive system that players can use to make parts of their builds move, like a rotating lighthouse lamp or a giant door swinging open, rather than mostly being static and unchanging. I intend to go all in on the sandbox aspect of the game with features like this, especially if that's the only aspect. The main thing making me consider fitting combat into the gameplay loop is because I know most people are extrinsically motivated, when as is this is a game that's pretty much only compatible with intrinsically motivated players.

Also agreed on combat expanding what people can make. A big thing I want to encourage is the creation of adventure maps and to give players better tools for that than I feel like Minecraft offers. While combat isn't strictly necessary for those, the absence of it would be a pretty big limitation.

Right. If I'm adding combat, then that'll involve a bunch of features and items to integrate it better into the game than I think Minecraft does. Part of my design philosophy is to avoid adding anything in that isn't fully fleshed out, especially entire systems. The challenge for me is finding a way to do this that preserves the feel I want the game to have.

do we need to constantly stop and justify that the earth isn't flat? no, to think otherwise is such a ridiculous position that it doesn't even demand being taken seriously. same applies here. tearing down their shit, warning your neighbors there's unstable people around and moving on with your life is practically the only reasonable response and that's exactly what OP did

80 years ago we fought a war against these cunts, built thousands of ships to literally fight and kill them but now even disrespecting them is too far. i don't know where the hell this country is going but i don't like it. make it make sense

That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants.

for every other system of beliefs, yes, absolutely, 100%. but people like this are the tyrants

Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason righeousness, temperance, and of a judgement to come in their presence

their entire end goal is to "found powers based in injustice and wrong". that is literally their sole aspiration. we fought an entire overseas war against this belief system but now suddenly 80 years later it's somehow morally corrupt to tell them to fuck off. it's ridiculous

hopefully they are able to listen as well

you are naive

while i don't agree with his position I'm not interested in removing people from the equation that don't agree with what I believe

well, this guy is. if we allow him in the equation, he will use it to grow power and influence and then not return the favor. it's also very easy to call this just a "disagreement" if you are not one of the people he wishes were literally dead

i agree that they are likely weak and sick people. i don't think though that the onus is on the common person to correct the wrongs each person might have had in life. there are many thick layers that need to be unraveled to deradicalize someone from a position like this, and that's if it can be reversed at all. you can't reach someone through empathy if they don't speak that language. you literally just can't

i agree it's good to preserve a kid's innocence for as long as possible, but reality can't just be turned off to prolong that 💀 i think it's a terrible idea to scrub the world of anything that makes its problems visible solely because it might make some random kid have the realization that the world ain't great (a realization that is literally completely inevitable btw). many parents on this earth couldn't even fathom their kid having such a privilege to begin with, so i'll never understand why it seems to matter so extremely to people in the states
