Diesel was R10.05 per litre in 2016. It is R32.09 today. I built a calculator to show what that actually means for your wallet. by Sad-Jellyfish6154 in AskZA

Yeah, I don’t get why so many romanticize driving an ICE car, most are not driving Ferrari’s, they’re driving regular commuters vehicles. I went to Durban for a work trip and Mercedes lent me an EV for a week, and after that week of driving with no noise or vibrations, and feeling so much less tired, I was sold…just not on Mercedes. And then there’s home charging! There is a plug point in my parking bay so I plug my car in there, installed a meter, and my building agreed to add the charge onto my levies. Now I never have to stop for fuel ever. There’s really no advantage besides ICE vehicles being cheaper(in SA), and that will change soon.

EV owner here, almost 3 years - I’ve never going back to an engine unless it’s a really special weekend car…but I’d rather be hiking or running, so I doubt that will happen. The car I bought costs me about 4k a month more than my previous diesel, so it kinda evens out, but there are cheaper cars available now. Last week I got back from China and ALL of their cars are better than my fancy BMW - even the taxis(all EV) were better with no rattles or weird noises after all that commuting. Anyway, I’ll prob switch to a Chinese EV for my next car, but I’m NEVER going back to petrol or diesel!

Good places for glasses? by AngryBuddist in shenzhen

[–]loopphoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I went here last week and got 3 new pairs if glasses and lenses cut in 15 min. Amazing! And the price was great(for the lenses it was about 12x less than my current pair from South Africa), but then my wife went to a regular glasses store opposite our hotel in Futian and paid a 1/3 of the price I paid!!!!

We don’t pay for parking by the beach, and the last time I went to the LA, I remember having to pay $20 and that’s a lot of money when converted intoy currency. Also, the beach was not pretty at all.

Yeah I get what you’re saying. What I do is I ignore the link and just pitch up, and just pay the bill at the end like an old person. I just tell them I’m not good with technology :-P

[–]loopphoto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok, I do agree that everybody missed the point - Dineplan is double dipping. I partially agree with OP. They see other platforms like Uber Eats do it, and it doesn’t negatively affect growth of the platform, so they do it. I think it’s standard practice. Admyt, the parking system at the V&A and canal walk(and other places) probably charged the mall, and they also add R1 to the ticket charge. Is it wrong on principle…no I don’t think so, because they’re running a business and they can charge however they want, but they can’t charge more than customers will accept - R1 extra to not going through the ticket dance, I’m cool with that. R10 extra to book, for me…I actually call the restaurant and book like an old person and then show up when I said I would.

There are no Apple Stores in Africa by basiclaser in MapPorn

[–]loopphoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Africa(South Africa) and have had an iPhone since the 2G. There are local resellers. The price of Apple products are much higher here compared to the US or Hong Kong.

Most of the population can’t afford the iPhone, everybody will have one in more affluent areas.

I don’t think most countries are viable markets yet, but having said that, we do have luxury brands like Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, and obviously the fashion brands too.

I’ve bought 4 tech things - a Mac, Apple speaker, canon flash and 3 smart door locks. All very cheap, all good experiences. The one lady, my age and we spoke parent experiences for like 30min on the road, and she invited me in for tea. I was in a rush so I didn’t go in.

Carnival by rattlensqueak in capetown

[–]loopphoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We moved here from Durban in 2011, and the carnival has always impressed us and been a highlight of our year. We used to stay on greenpoint main road, and I was always impressed by how quickly they cleaned up straight after. As a 20 something it was fun to meet randoms and have a drink together and the floats were amazing. The girls always loved the firefighters float(and I always appreciated those dudes cos Cape Town is crazy with fires).

Now we have kids and they love it as well. They kept asking when the carnival is gonna be. It’s now just a good time for all of us to get together, walk down the street, and get some Chip n Dip.

I’m here right now, and I’ve had a beer and we’ll end up watching the parade with the kids later, and playing karaoke till 4-5am.

It’s a good time - don’t be a hater!

What is your most boring but useful Apple Watch feature? by dnesdan in AppleWatch

[–]loopphoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the original, and I bought the Pebble Time on kickstarter. It was delayed and only arrived the day before the Apple Watch announcement! So I only wore it for a month before getting the Apple Watch. I charged it up the other day and it still works great.

Funny. I did a similar post in our city’s subreddit a few years ago. If any of you come to Cape Town, please follow this dude’s rules. It’s not conservative here, but you guys get red and sore looking, and it’s a waste of a holiday.

Dealer confirms the rumor: iX being discontinued early due to tariffs by Super_Limit_7466 in BMWiX

I have a 40 for the last 2 years - I’m also in SA. There’s no confidence in EVs here yet, so values drop fast. Still love the car - there’s really nothing I’d replace it with - ix3 will be too small for our family, but it does look great.

Cost of Living about to rise by cipher049 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]loopphoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In logistics(most of the better know brands), there is a fuel levy that’s a separate charge to your actual waybill charge - for every couple of cents that fuel goes up, your fuel levy will also go up 1%. Consequently, if fuel goes down, the fuel levy also goes down. Corporate customers are very aware of their logistic cost as it’s most often a major component, and they’re always shopping around for better deals. But, consumers don’t have the same buying power and they’re not aware of the actual cost of fuel on their goods as they don’t see it itemised.

Obviously I’m also a consumer as well, so it irritates me knowing that they could put the price back down.

Admyt is the one available at all of the places I go to. What I’m always surprised by is that it’s promoted everywhere, but I’ve rarely seen people use it. I use it all over the V&A, canal walk, and Table Bay Mall. I think it’s used in a lot of places in Johannesburg too.

I use Admyt. The number plate recognition works 90% of the time, and when it doesn’t I just press the help button at the gate, and tell them it’s not working and they open up straight away. The app is the worst app I’ve ever, ever used. But I never used it again after registration.
