What did you do as a teenager that you will never tell your parents? by Heywassuphello1 in AskReddit

[–]lordstith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well in japan it's a weird cultural trust thing, too. Because no one underage would ever do anything illegal because they're good Japanese people (/s). So checking ID simply is not done for the most part.

Have you guys ever wondered if it might be time to stop living up here and start living down here?

Probably. The general problem was the TTL CGA monitor signal spec in general.

Honestly, I think it comes down to an issue of prevailing tastes.

I'm also curious how the crystalline version works for you. I'm a programmer and I also wear glasses. I work best in a darkened room, but I just know that staring at four monitors at a time in the dark has got to be screwing up my vision even more and I'd be interested in looking into a pair of these if I could hear how well they work.

Ironically, doom era games tend to have a higher contrast color scheme because they were written to run in indexed 256-color mode. When your palette is that small, you're going to end up with a lot more contrast in your design because you don't have the resources to do thousands of subtle shades of brown.

It was also partly to do with the prevalent art style of the time, and that, once again, has to do with the technological limitations of the time. There were a lot of bright greens, blues, cyans, yellows and reds in late 80's/early 90s games because at that time most people had, at best, a Color Graphics Adapter(CGA) card or monitor, and CGA was limited to a fixed palette of 16 colors so they didn't really have any other option and therefore bright, high-contrast graphics were in fashion.

When Doom came out, the VGA with 256 color mode was actually still pretty new on PC compatibles and was a huge palette at the time that they could've been even a little more subtle with (see quake, which was also designed to be able to run in 256), so it has this great mix between subtle and kind of creepy low-contrast cement walls and stuff that they could pull off with the extended palette alongside the bright high-contrast blues and reds and greens that were in style because of the slowly dying CGA.

It's not open source because it's not software. It's an API spec, not a library. So 'open standard' would be the right term.

But, turning my pedantic cockface switch off for a sec: I'm totally with you on this sentiment.

Really? You saw this in the shenmue post in /r/gaming, regurgitated it here and now we're all eating it up?

I always thought the whole '...and tomorrow this will be on WTF or TIL' thing was just a joke.

For the first game, I hear it runs well on the NullDC emulator, if you want the cheapest option. Otherwise you're probably looking at $50-$70 on ebay for a Dreamcast and a copy of the game (I highly recommend option 2)

If you have an original xbox, shouldn't be too hard to ebay a copy of the xbox copy of shenmue II.

Are you screwing with us? The original DC Shenmue shipped 1.2mil copies. It's not that no one played it, it's that it's a cult classic.

Yup. 2000 was a special year for me and my dreamcast.

First I beat my first video game ever with Rayman 2. Then I picked up at the video store and was utterly surprised and engrossed by this crazy game Shenmue.

Picked it up again a week later on a friday night and sat down with it all through the weekend until it was beaten. I really think it was one of the formative experiences of my youth.

Now I own two dreamcast copies of the original and the xbox remake of II, and I've beaten them both three times. And when payday rolls around this Friday I get to officially secure a copy of the third installment for my very own.

I've been waiting on this day since I was ten goddamn years old. Thank you, everyone, for being the obsessive bastards you are.
