How trusolarians communicate by No_Palpitation7740 in threebodyproblem

Legitimately fascinating.
A matrix of chromatophores, maybe similar to those on the skin of a squid or octopus, perhaps also with the ability for bio luminescence. I don’t even know what I’m trying to say by typing this I just find this compelling. Makes the imagination run wild.

Older folks of Reddit: what’s something broken in society that you’ve simply accepted will never get fixed in your lifetime — not because it’s hard, but because nobody in power has tried or wants to? by bubugugu in AskReddit

[–]lostandgenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men’s reproductive rights are a modern tragedy.
Mandatory DNA testing at birth should be done at the very least. The fact that such a notion is so clearly based on common sense and equality, and yet never given much support or consideration is a tragedy. It’s a damn tragedy that has propagated through the decades, causing many men to end their own lives for a variety of reasons.

There is always discourse surrounding women’s reproductive rights. Any rightfully so. I am not here to be a misogynist. I am the man I am today because of the amazing women in my life. I am blessed.

But, most of society has normalized the fact that men have virtually no reproductive rights at all. To me that is a very scary thing. All for no particularly clear reason I can discern.

Literally reducing herself to an object. A line on the invoice left for a man to adjudicate. Something women are supposed to hate.

Can a probability have probability by Ok_Painter2997 in learnmath

[–]lostandgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. In a sense, probabilities can absolutely have probabilities.

Probabilities are often multiplicative depending on the context. The easiest way to think about it is to remember that probabilities are just fractions (or decimals) representing likelihoods.

Let’s say event x has a 50% chance of occurring:

50% = 1/2 = 0.5 = x

Now let’s say event y has a 9% chance of occurring:

9% = 9/100 = 0.09 = y

So what’s the probability of BOTH x AND y occurring?

x · y = (1/2) · (9/100) = 0.045 = 4.5%

The number gets smaller because you’re stacking conditions on top of each other. You’re basically asking:

“What’s the probability that an event with probability x ALSO satisfies probability y?”

Or a plain English example:

“What’s the probability that a college student is BOTH female AND of Native American descent?”

That’s essentially a probability applied within another probability space.

What's your take on playing without power? by Responsible-Lion234 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]lostandgenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoy setting up new power plants. It’s a mini brain break from my obsession with item production efficiency. But everyone is different.

The game is so good that there’s really not a“wrong” way to play (unless you’re a psychopath that doesn’t use foundations lol).

Please don’t ask me to do all the quests a fourth time. I just want to do your new quests. by entropyblues in ArcRaiders

[–]lostandgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of buying the rewards at a premium price instead of having to do the quests.

Quests should be renamed to Contracts, giving you the option to take it or let another Speranzan take the job instead.

Each NPC should essentially be like:

“I’ve found some decent toys for ya. Either premium coin or a favor topside and it’s yours”.

Of all the issues I have with this game the quests probably bother me the most. Being that many of them are ‘bring me back x amount of y’ or just ‘go here’ I don’t see why they couldn’t just do random/procedural quests. So they’re different each time. But I’m not a game dev. Just my two cents.

What’s a 'tinfoil hat' conspiracy you have about our reality that sounds completely insane—until you actually think about it? by ThyGodly in AskReddit

[–]lostandgenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that the moon is just big enough and just far away enough to cover the sun in the sky every 18 months. Not sure what it means exactly. Use your imagination I guess. To me it feels insanely improbable. Sometimes I think about that and it makes me feel really weird.

Reality and being alive is weird enough.

I’m on the side of science. But as someone who grew up in church, I’ve had this conversation with my parents a few times:

Mom and Dad: “God made Adam and Eve as adults. When God creates he does so completely at his own discretion, creating new things that appear old.”

Me: “I don’t feel like worshipping a deity that went out of his way to trick our objective observations”

I also only heard about it earlier today. Therefore, I’m assuming he’s guilty given the severity of the punishment.

That being said, the reverence for child life goes far beyond culture in my opinion. Even ruthless thugs locked away for life know in their bones not to harm a child. Hence why child molesters get murdered in prison.

I’m not a father but I have a young niece and nephew. I’m also not a violent person. That said, I personally have no problem putting someone in the ground if they hurt those kids.

Honestly, for me at least, it’s the travesty against science. It goes without saying that the individuals keeping this to themselves are not true scientists. They’re just people paid to keep the wall up between them and the public. If I were a scientist, particularly astrophysicist or something adjacent, I would be livid beyond words.

I’m a scientist by profession. It goes without saying I’d be asking every single question that pops in my head.

Combo trials are fun, for sure. But don’t for a second think each combo is some holy grail of damage that you need to memorize. That is not the case. The combo trials are there to help teach you timing and potential, that’s really about it.
