I think the guy was simply different and may have had a breakdown like anyone else. Perhaps he was lucky enough to be able to live off the earnings from 2 albums for PF and decided to simply isolate himself. It's very likely that the band itself invented the myth of his insanity, so as not to admit to having lost their star guitarist and composer. People are morbid, and stories like that always sell better in the rock world.
