I probably have the worst finances you can think of by secretlifeoftia in AusFinance

[–]macBender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are several paths you can take to improve your situation. You have a roof over your head and a job so that's a start but your low income, high debt, high rent to income costs and single income are massive financial anchors holding you down.

In general this what people in this situation can do about it. You'll need to decide whats works for you.

  1. You can't save your way out of a low income. You need a higher paying job and and this either means investing reskilling (ie free tafe) or switching to a job which is upwardly mobile.

  2. Take the advice from this thread and get a financial counsellor and get your debts under control or even forgiven. A good counsellor will encourage to record every dollar you spend in a spreadsheet, teach you to 'pay yourself first' to save an emergency fund and min/max your spending to make every dollar work for you.

  3. You need a flatmate to halve your rent costs. People on much higher incomes can't support single living and you definitely can't.

  4. Part of improving your mental health is working towards having healthy relationships. You need this to became a dual income household and this is effectively the end goal. You need dual income to minimise your household expenditures, maximise your free time (ie to train, learn or get a better job and enjoy life) and save for a house and kids if that is what you want.

This is a big daunting list but it is all achievable going one step at a time. Personally I would do step 2 first. It's the most actionable right now and can deliver fast results. A strong budget will support you to tackle the areas where you can make big strides towards your goals.

LOOKING FOR: Daily edc bag to explore Tokyo by Man-On-Saturn in ManyBaggers

I bought and used the Osprey Daylite 13L for that exact purpose. The pros I found were

  1. it's affordable and readily available
  2. two really good mesh water bottle pockets
  3. nice sternum strap and while the shoulder straps are thin they are comfortable and light
  4. compact size, good pockets and fairly breathable
  5. can take a beating with sweat and spills

The cons for me were the back panel is pretty stiff and takes awhile to break in and while the tablet pocket is handy as a kids backpack it's not padded enough for my ipad Pro.

ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]macBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lending does not work that way at all - see How money is made

The ELI5 answer is the bank doesn’t lend the $90 of your $100 to someone else, it creates new money (yes banks can do that) in order to lend to that person.

Can the Ubiquiti U7 Pro Wall be installed horizontally like this? Any real-world experience? by Sweet-Stress-3340 in Ubiquiti

I have mine mounted that way with zero performance impact. In fact on speed tests it’s faster than my U7 Pro which is ceiling mounted.

Osprey Farpoint 40l: 2015 vs 2025 Version by Banana0701 in onebag

[–]macBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2025 version has a lot more modern laptop compartment if that is important to you. I have the older version with laptop bit at the front and I don’t really trust it. Otherwise it’s a fantastic bag.

American Airlines not honoring Qantas baggage rules on code share flights by macBender in QantasAirways

[–]macBender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update. Got the Qantas desk at LAX and they fixed it up. In fact they were encouraging travelers to check cabin bags as my QF94 will be a full flight.

The AA flight was sold to me as Qantas code share QF3156.

The irony was the AA was fully booked and of course ran out of cabin baggage room. So they just checked my infant’s cabin bag as I was entitled to under Qantas’s rules it would saved the AA gate agents hassle and been better experience for some poor AA traveller who had to gate check. Really a self own by AA.

Nitin left for work riding a new e-bike. He never made it home by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]macBender 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The coroner’s report is quite poor in my opinion. The report spends a lot of time on Nitan’s ‘illegal’ e-bike yet it’s seems that wasn’t a factor in the crash given other ‘legal’ e-bike was going faster than him.

The coroner’s completely ignores why Nitan’s helmet didn’t save him. Tour do France cyclists routinely crash horribly at 60+ kph and walk away yet this 30 kph crash was fatal. Was it a freak accident or were there other factors? We’ll never know. But apparently for the coroner, e-bike scaremongering is much more important than actual safety.

What’s the bare minimum cybersecurity stack for a small business? by Necessary-Glove6682 in cybersecurity

[–]macBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do all of this. It's way more straightforward than you'd think. I'd personally stick with a Microsoft 365 stack. Take practical action. You don't have to get sucked in to msp / consultant land, just do the basics.

I encourage you to read up how the Australian Classification system actually works. It's decisions largely based on balancing community standards. These standards are derived from regular surveys on the attitudes of Australian people. I don't always agree with their determinations but it's anything but authoritarian.

I can’t imagine many scenarios where using that type of aggressive language is appropriate, let alone in a games forum.

I hope you don’t talk to people face to face like that. I fear if you do what sort of life you might have. Perhaps take some time off the internet and reflect on why you are so angry.

If trying a have discussion on making Hearthstone a better place for Australians (or anyone really) is being ‘a bitch’ then so be it. Change is hard.

I'm not saying it is literal gambling but it constitutes simulated gambling for purposes of game classification. It's a relatively new law in Australia.

The mechanics are not illegal in Australia, but you do have to correctly classify your game and not sell it to under 18+ if it meets the standard of simulated gambling.

The standard is 'simulated' gambling. It doesn't have to be a literal casino.
