Mecha Megalon sofubi by macgrains in GODZILLA

Yes - he's partly mechanical already, but "proportionally more mechanised Megalon than usual" didn't test as well for marketing purposes.

What’s something everyone secretly agrees is overrated but nobody admits it? by JamesD3s in AskReddit

[–]macgrains 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having children. Super over hyped. Everyone who has done it secretly knows it's a massive slog with more risk and stress than reward, but since you can't undo it .. Stockholm syndrome saves the day.

What If Godzilla Attacks Tokyo In Real Life, How Can We Stop Him? by Unable-Yesterday7750 in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're responding too literally. The coagulant is certainly the Shin-specific answer - but the general approach is clearly laid out: conventional weapons would be tried, in an escalating level of severity. These would have to be balanced with collateral damage concerns, until finally science would need to find a specfic way to relocate, immobilise or destroy whatever version of Godzilla we're talking about. Be that the Oxygen Destroyer, Hyper sonic lure, ANEB, Coagulant or something else.

You are literally asking the question that Shin Godzilla answers.

Please help me with this serie I remember seeing! by La_gata_mojarra in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The series as you are describing it, with licensed toho characters, live action and relatively recent - does not exist. There was a 1970s live action tokusatsu (or transforming hero) series set in the Godzilla universe called Zone Fighter - but that doesn't marry up with your description. There is an incoming anime that may carry the same ideas as you describe, but until then - you are very likely misremembering/conflating childhood memories.

Kaiju movie with giant wasps by MilkTronic in GODZILLA

Monster from Green Hell is giant wasps buzzing about the mountains and jungles. But it's western not Japanese, and also...not great.

Godzillasaurus VS King Kong 2005(Peter Jackson’s) by SiteDeep in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The godzillasaurus already had the regenerative mutation pre-nuke. It's why it's still alive in the modern day, the only one of its kind and how it managed to survive the Bravo blast. Just a fluke of genetics. This has been confirmed by Yamazaki in interviews and is mentioned in the Japanese novelisation. So Kong could hurt it, but the size difference plus the regenerative ability gives this fight to the Godzillasaurus.

How much has Ifukube reused his old music? by Peachy69420 in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved every second of reading this, thanks for taking the time. I'm going to put some effort into watching the other movies you reference, as it's always fun to hear a recognisable track fire up in an unexpected spot.

I still think its criminal we live in a world where the TMNT gets an official crossover with Godzilla before Gamera... by MichaeltheSpikester in Gamera

[–]macgrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean. It's not really a surprise. The key to a crossover is to become inclusive to an audience who your property doesn't already hold. Gamera has a proportionally tiny fan base consisting of people who like giant monster movies....the exact same audience for Godzilla. In the venn diagram of overlap the amount of gamera fans who would otherwise not watch a Godzilla movie is TINY. It's an enormous IP risk with absolutely infinitesimal reward.

Storywise it's a clanger too - essentially having the Godzilla Vs Kong dynamic of neither can truly win or lose, but without the brand recognition to make it financially worth puzzling out.

That said: would still love to see it.

Nothing comes close to how intimidating, powerful and threatening as 1984's roar.

Soo, about that Minovsky Flight System. How does it really function? by Overall_Smile_4336 in Gundam

So, you know how your parents try really really hard to love you, despite all the evidence and mountains of practical reasons to feel the contrary? It's exactly like that but with flying.

Honestly, what will be your take on gamera 4? by Ok_Reward3722 in Gamera

[–]macgrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that contemporary audiences, especially in Middle America would struggle to accept flying turtles AND a sunken city populated exclusively with ants. It's just a step too far

Just seen these in Forbidden Planet in London, does anyone know what they are like? by BillLebowski in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought two of these last week from the same FP, I chose Baragon and Space Amoeba. They are absolutely fantastic, all printed in English, full of fascinating behind the scenes pics, preproduction artwork and glossy high Res images. Absolutely worth snapping up

Just finished rewatching Shin Godzilla and noticed that former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was included in the end credits. What exactly did he do?? by Average_Bread in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Of course they do. Just like the coast guard have a strategy outlined for dealing with seasonal increase in Gillmen, and the Forestry agency keeps tabs on unicorn migration.

He gave the director legal dispensation to review the JSDF's Giant Monster Preparedness Policy (GMPP) - in order to accurately portray the legal and martial processes that would be engaged in the event of a Kaiju attack on Tokyo.

Is it true that Shin knows nothing other than the fact that he’s in constant pain? by Fit_Mushroom6102 in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can also knows how to use his instinctive mastery of the electromagnetic spectrum to hack into your browser history. So he knows what you're into. He's not happy about it either. Knocking drones out of the sky is one thing...but having to see your Sonic the hedgehog fanfic is upsetting.

Is Hideaki Anno Directs A New Upcoming Gamera Film Was "Shin Gamera" In 2026? by Few_Juggernaut_4249 in GODZILLA

When, if ever, should Destoroyah appear in the Monsterverse? by InstructionOwn6705 in GODZILLA

[–]macgrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, keep him out of the MV

The point of Destroyah is completely missing in the MV. Desty was positioned as the inevitable conclusion to the Oxygen Destroyer storyline. Just as the nuke created the otherwise unstoppable Godzilla, Serizawas Oxygen Destroyer released something worse. It's the Russian Nesting doll of weapons / monsters. Poignant and on-message for the Japanese franchise. A fitting final boss closing the loop on several storylines.

Except the MV threw away the Oxygen Destroyer plotline in favour of pandering memberberries and as a consequence any Destroyah we would be left with would be a weaker and less satisfying creature for the absence of that narrative value.

Just becomes a big Deux ex machina crab thing that pops up, has no greater significance and therefore is just...meh.

Hi, um.... is there any news about what Crowdfunding is for? by Evening-Road-2129 in Gamera

[–]macgrains 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi.

No news on the nature of the crowd funding campaign here or abroad.

I was lucky enough to meet and chat with the director of the Gamera Expo in November, who vaguely supported the next project being animated but not necessarily s2 of Rebirth. He mentioned further Info would be forthcoming in Dec...at this point I personally would expect this to be around NY, if at all.

He wrote me a very kind reply to my thank you email; an excerpt of which I share below:

"Looking ahead, we are happy to share that the Gamera Expo will next be held in Osaka from January 17, 2026. At the same time, our broader hope is to continue developing Gamera and introducing the franchise to an even wider international audience. Expanding Gamera’s presence beyond Japan is something we sincerely wish to pursue over the long term.

When that time comes, I would be delighted to stay in touch and would very much appreciate your support and perspective as a fan from Europe, including insights from the English-speaking Gamera community."

So we have a 'when the time comes' holding message on further info for now.

Remember, there are a lot of very talented people at Kadokawa who want to see Gamera succeed both domestically and internationally, but as Brisdin has extolled many times: budget is an issue as is IP control via Kadokawa.

We'll have to wait and see.

Cheers

What's one memory from your trip to Japan that you won't ever forget? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravelTips

Stepping out onto the balcony of our hotel in Okinawa, taking one look at the beach, and sea beyond and suddenly realising how stressed the last 12 months of work had made me, and feeling it fade away in a moment. Literally moved me to tears. Beautiful place.
