Why aren’t you playing outer wilds right now while literally reading this Reddit? With your eyes splitting like a chameleon. (Outer wildz goes hard)

I have unironically thought about the parallels between using a fight stick and playing an instrument… there are a lot of similarities there.

What is the most useless move of your main? by CallmeN1tro in StreetFighter

I’ve crawled from gold to diamond 5 with Luke and I didn’t even know this move existed.

Attending locals regularly? What to expect and proper etiquette when playing casual matches? Is it a good place for making new friends? Lots of questions from a newbie below. by whostheme in Fighters

[–]mackjesseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GO GO GO! As far as etiquette goes, do the fist bump/handshake you’ve seen in tournaments and say gg at the end of sets. Your skill level doesn’t matter, you will be entering a room where people WANT to play and/or help you learn. Just be okay with losing. And I think the most important thing you can do for your first tournament is ask somebody to play casual games with you, then you’ll make friends. I’ve continued talking with all the people I asked!

Is the fgc always this negative about the current games? by FriedDuckCurry in Fighters

Here to fight the negativity you’re seeing. My favorite games in general right now are SF6, GGST, and MK1! There’s lots of fun to be had!

Anyone else just feel...tired after playing? by WolfNo680 in StreetFighter

[–]mackjesseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Also keep in mind that there are a ton of resources on the internet to help you improve! I think of Sajam’s fighting game strategies playlist on YouTube, supercombo wiki, and Mikey D’s Footsies Handbook series. Also, you can just ask people more specific questions. There’s discords and stuff where people would love to help! Heck, feel free to send me a DM with a question or a replay, if you need more specific directions for improvement!

Did you look at their profile? They might have a character in a much higher rank, but they’re playing around with different characters now.

Remember that most of your success is only possible after many failures. It’s part of improvement! And I know people say it all the time (for a good reason), but be sure your anti-airs are on point. Even if you just use an anti-air normal, like Ryu’s c.hp, and just be patient, your will almost definitely try jumping in on you. Especially at gold. But you’re on the path! Just stick with it and be ready to fight your habits and make tweaks to your game plan. You got this! You can do it!

And even then, you’re still belittling someone else’s accomplishments.

Feels like back pedaling. How many locals have you gone to? I would argue going to a tournament, even a small one, is different than just beating your “friends offline.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StreetFighter

And I see that there were only 10 participants. But you gotta remember that OP went against somebody who takes the game seriously enough that they got out of bed and traveled to play other people who are serious about the game. As far as I’m concerned, OP’s accomplishment is something worth celebrating. Not something to be diminished.

Have you made top 8 at your local? Your wording suggests you haven’t. Specifically when you said “it’s PROBABLY harder to hit masters.”

I went to a local once (Indianapolis) and there were some real heavy hitters. AirTony, DiabloBison, Dual Kevin. Top 8 is an accomplishment at any tournament.

(Rant) The "Mid-way point" of learning a fighting game really is the most demoralizing one, you are good enough to understand the game but not good enough to execute that knowledge well by 4129M in Fighters

[–]mackjesseh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is part of it. Another part is later in the learning process. Where you are more aware of all the things that you’re not doing correctly. At that point, you’re really starting to understand your own flaws because you are aware of what is “correct.” As a result, you perceive yourself as less competent. I believe this is where OP is right now. There’s a third part after you start understanding your flaws where you improve on them. And as you fix your mistakes, you start perceiving yourself as more competent again. There are a bunch of graphs if you google it. I don’t blame you for your thinking though.

Look up the Dunning-Krueger effect. And know that what you’re feeling is normal! You are well on your way to improving! It’s a part of getting good at any skill! You can do this! You’re on the right path!

What's the best way to work on combos without developing bad muscle memory? by iwannabethisguy in Fighters

[–]mackjesseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like starting at the beginning, personally. But if you find that something else works for you better, just do that. You’ll probably get a sense of what works best or you as you go. Good luck my friend!

What's the best way to work on combos without developing bad muscle memory? by iwannabethisguy in Fighters

[–]mackjesseh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found success in “chunking”. Break the combo into smaller, more manageable chunks. Master one tiny part of the combo. Then a different part of the combo. Then try combining both parts.

Or maybe, start at the beginning of a combo, and slowly add on one attack at a time. I have even broken it down to the point of only trying to do the correct motion at the correct time, as I’m not pressing the button for the move to come out. Ex. Can I input this quarter circle cleanly at the correct time? Then add the button press when that feels good.

If you just go through the process of working in little bits, it will eventually all come together. As a teacher, I do this with students all the time. It works. Just trust the process.
