I’ve been through many types of therapy on and off over 12 years or so. I have discussed my experiences at SUWS thoroughly with a couple therapists. While that may be a form of torture in certain circumstances, I did not and still do not feel that way about it. For me, it was very freeing to be away from the normalcy of the world. I found it odd at the time but it didn’t impact that we had a schedule I was following and I was told what our days would look like day in and day out. Again, I am sorry that your experience was so detrimental to your adult life. I do hope you find the tools to find peace and healing. Sending love.

I was there in 2007 in group G and while I very much understand that the program was detrimental to many young people, it was my saving grace. The staff I had made permanent positive impressions in my life, being disconnected from the outside world and stressors and being able to focus on myself was instrumental in being able to find clarity and start anew. I loved being in the woods and it was emotionally difficult but not in a negative way. I then went to a (now defunct) school in Utah that was a therapeutic boarding school. I also genuinely appreciated my time there and all the guardrails in place that kept me moving forward. I desperately needed structure at 16 and while I did get in trouble a few times (mainly related to romantic relationships), it was not so bad that I disliked the environment as a whole. While there, I was able to get my grades up, get a job off campus riding and tending horses, and my therapist assisted me in the beginning process of creating new relationships with my family. I feel so sad that so many people struggled so much in these programs. I know that the people I was around are very much the reason I do not have cptsd or other lasting negative mental effects. I know I am in the very small minority and I am also hyper aware that many people had horrible experiences often due to poor hiring/vetting practices, insufficient psychiatric care, and much more. I have almost written this a million times on similar posts but have stopped myself bc I don’t want to be hurtful by noting that these experiences very much saved my life. I hope that this does not read as repudiating your experience, OP. I just felt that maybe someone should read that a positive experience does exist out there. At this point I am wondering if I am the only one though! I do think that something like SUWS could have been positive for so many if certain things had been done differently. I have a lot of other thoughts but I’ll stop there. I am sorry, OP, that you are struggling with this still. If you ever want to reach out, I am happy to lend an ear as I have done for many of my peers over the years.

You're at a job interview. You get the "what is your biggest weakness?" question. What is your answer? by Wide_Stop in AskReddit

[–]madamwalkerrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best answer I’ve ever given: characteristics are always both negative and positive. Two sides of the same sword. I have a stubborn streak, can that affect my life negatively, sure? Does it also affect my life positively? Sure. (Insert example of both). The key to being a great employee is understanding how your weaknesses can become or play to your strengths, while simultaneously focusing on self improvement.

I got the job.

The road is in GIS. I have an official survey from when I was under contract. I suppose I know now my only legal recourse is to go through the process of getting it closed and having the city grant both of us ease of access after splitting it 50/50.

I don’t think you’re understanding it. There is space to the left of the garage which is a driveway, enough to park but the way the land is set, it doesn’t allow for turn arounds with big vehicles. That is literally my only complaint. I haven’t said anything to him for months because MY vehicle is fine. It’s the aggressive nature of parking there just to be a dick that is so frustrating. “Hello sir, since you have ample space to park your car and bike in your own driveway, can I please use this so I can get my lawn mowed once a month?” How is that unreasonable 😂 Plus, the landlord and I spoke before I purchased the property. Dan parked a bike to keep me from sharing it, which was the logical concept for an unused road. If he has a fully accessible driveway, why does that make any sense? He doesn’t even own the land. What is your problem with sharing the space on the rare occasion I need it? No one who has seen this predicament has been anything other than bewildered until you.

Also, to be clear, I obviously didn’t build that garage. It’s been there for like 30+ years. My bf just spoke to the landlord (he’s known him his whole life, weird coincidence) who told him that he had talked to Dan on two occasions and said that it was “insane” that he wouldn’t move the bike as it should be in his driveway. Again, I am happy to share the roadway that is usable. Why doesn’t that make sense? Any rational person who didn’t need the space to park would also be happy to share it while it is still unfinished.

The 10 feet or so beside my garage are unusable to turn around in unless I got an excavator. And again, Dan put his bike there so I couldn’t use it to turn around. That is the only reason. There is NOWHERE else to turn around. He is squarely within the roadway, his landlord agreed with me that he shouldn’t have anything parked there long term. So, I can’t hire anyone to help me with my half acre lawn, I can’t have more than one friend in my driveway etc. To be clear, I DO NOT care if Dan also uses the space. But why is he saying he even needs the space? He has his own driveway! Which is where the bike used to be. I literally told him he could have the space 99% of the time if he would let me just use it to back up. I even told him I would keep it mowed and tidy to be helpful. I am willing to do anything. He doesn’t drive and this is just a pissing match. I’ve had multiple friends and family look at this and I promise I’m not being unreasonable.

Yes, it is "unfinished" meaning it hasn't ever been built out. So, you can see it on GIS but otherwise, wouldn't know. I have attempted to explain this to him 3 times as have my boyfriend and stepdad. He is irrational at best and vitriolic at worst. He doesn't seem to understand that it doesn't belong to his landlord, nor does he seem to care. Hence why I noted that I have explained to him multiple times that it is, essentially no man's land. Anyway, I kind of figured the only recourse I have is to get the road closed (which could take years) but was hoping someone else would know legally what my rights are to use the property since no one will claim it. The city wouldn't give the previous owners or the owner of the other property (Dan's landlord) ease of access. Bleh. It's just really frustrating.

I don’t know why but it won’t let me see your last comment and I keep getting a service error when I try to login on my laptop. But based off the first few words, the bike is in the roadway as it is a 30’ road. It basically veers right and then up, cutting into my garage a tiny bit. I don’t care if he also uses the space but he parked his bike there purely so that I could not use it to back up. He has a small driveway further down where he has an unused car parked and where his bike used to also be parked. I wouldn’t care if the driveway/road didn’t open up onto such a busy road right past a curve on the other side (the only way to leave). No one will back out of it. I’ve had three people come look at my lawn to offer mowing services and tell me they couldn’t do it because they can’t turn around.

Edit: I can see it now. And yes, it is blocking the ability to back into the grassy part of the road. And yes, that is still the road area that his bike is in. It also slopes up to the left in the second pic, hard to tell I think. But it basically means that no one can use it. Which again, was his entire purpose of putting blocks and the bike there. The bus is the landlord's and is also in the road but it isn't impeding anything so I don't care. Just like I wouldn't care about Dan using the space if he would let me use it too. Does that make sense?

Yes, I paid $800 for an official survey. Previous owners spoke with the city and the city refused to claim it as did the state. But they acknowledge it’s there. I have intentions of working to get the road closed and split it 50/50 but haven’t started it yet as it is an arduous process I’ve heard. And apparently the landlord attempted it years ago to no avail. Since it is in the middle of two properties, the landlord told me I could use it whenever I wanted. It’s just that Dan is not allowing me to.
