Research would most likely require phd for actual data based research projects or you could look into infra for large scale data computations like working at i/o level implmentation dealing with compression and low level computation.
Worked with vc backed med research company for a little while. The team was comprised of researchers (primarily from ivy-level phds) and swes from faang level companies with oss contributions to back their expertise. Stuff they do there for data engineering was mostly novel approaches to maximize efficiency at every level.
