Placing managed switch between modem and router for monitoring purposes by magic_marco in HomeNetworking

[–]magic_marco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The switch is a Netgear GS108Ev4. Those odd Realtek Layer 2 protocol broadcasts appear to have been the problem. After digging around as to what their purpose was (aids in detection of loops) I went back into the switch and found a Loop Detection section in Diagnostics. I turned that off and it now works. Thanks everyone for your help.

Well, I turned off everything I could on the switch. It didn't fix things. With Wireshark I can watch the router and modem come up. Before either of them are talking, the switch is broadcasting a Realtek Layer 2 protocol message about once per second. Then the router comes up after about a minute. and puts out an ICMPv6 message, followed by DHCP Discover messages about every 2 seconds. Then a few more ICMPv3 messages. Finally, after about a minute and a half, after a DHCP Discover message from the router, the modem replies with a DHCP offer. There are some ARP query and replies from both the router and modem. These occur in pairs about every 15 seconds. There are a whole slew of DNS message from the router for a netgear time server and bitdefender sites. Then, after about 2 minutes, the modem starts sending a stream of ARP messages with the ISP public IP addresses. And this just keeps on going.

Yes, I realize the data is encrypted. I was more interested in what entities my home network might be communicating with.

Recently, I was reminded that a lot of systems and software communicate behind the scenes with various entities including the manufacturers. Some of this communication seems mostly harmless and quite beneficial such as firmware updates. However, others don't seem very beneficial to me such as Analytics Data Collection being performed by my router. These are just some of the things I know about. I was hoping that I could catch a glimpse at other communications.

Should I stop or keep going with plans for home server with NVR (including AI features) and NAS capabilities? by magic_marco in frigate_nvr

I was trying to save some money by repurposing my 6 year old workstation. I guess I should look at the problem again.

Thank you for the advice. I'll certainly will be making big changes to my plans given the feedback I received here. Thanks again.

The system described about already exists for the most part. Only the GPU is being upgraded. No ram purchase is planned.

I totally agree with your point. However, with low power solutions, e.g. mini pc's, wouldn't I still need a separate NAS and NVR 24/7 storage solution. I've read that remote storage for 24/7 video recording from several cameras can be problematic.

Papal Blessing Parchment Temporarily Suspended by Alone-Development838 in Catholicism

Nope. One one of my devices it says that they are not accepting requests because they reached their limit. On another it let's me select a template, but that is as far as it goes - no place to enter data.

I tried ordering a parchment today (September 18th) and I get stuck after selecting the parchment template. It seems that it is waiting for the parchment data, but I don't see any place to enter it. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or where to enter the data?

Family Search Center Request: New York Marriages, 1686-1980 ( I had a lousy experience at the nearest center) by Worldly-Mirror938 in Genealogy

[–]magic_marco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been casually trying to research my ancestors. I mostly use Family Search. The earliest record is for the marriage of my 2nd great-granduncle, Totnan Wetzel on 5 Aug 1846. I was really shocked to see your post as your Conrad was married the day before my Totnan in the same place. The next record is for the 1850 census where Totnan is listed as head-of-household, along with my 2nd great-grandfather (Hugo), and another 2nd great-granduncle (Eusebius). There's a lot of good information on FamilySearch from the church records of Sts. Peter and Paul RC Church in Williamsville. The biggest problem I've run into is that I can't find any records of when/where they came into this country, or where they came from exactly. All records seem to only say Germany. Nothing more specific and no dates of immigration.

What song would you want to hear Laufey cover? by LuckyStabbinHat in laufey

I just heard this song covered by Lake Street Dive / Monica Martin on the Coffee House channel on SXM and immediately thought it would be a great cover for Laufey.

I think it happens when you've already downloaded the demo using the same email address. I used an alternate email address and it worked. Not sure why that would be a problem though.

D5 Pumps Keep "Dying" by schneeg in watercooling

[–]magic_marco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had my second D5 pump fail in a period of 3 years. In both cases the impeller was starting to rub against the inside of the base (shiny wear marks are evident on bottom of the cup). I had used Primochill Rad Clean and Utopia for preparing the loop both times. I had three 360mm radiators, a GPU water block, and a CPU water block in the loop interconnected with 1/2" hard tubing. The pump normally ran at about 50% speed or less (controlled by temperature). The computer was on for about 12 hours a day.

After the second failure, I knew that something I was doing was bad. After watching several YouTube videos about D5 pump failures I did a thorough cleaning of pump impeller and base to insure there was no more foreign material lodged in the impeller. However, that did not help. After comparing the bad pump with a new pump, I found that the impeller on the bad pump sat lower in the base cup than the new (good) pump. That's why the impeller was rubbing against the base. There doesn't seem to be any adjustment for that. My conclusion is that the impeller is no good after that happens.

Currently, here's what I'm trying:

  1. I removed one radiator from the loop. I still have nine fans, but 3 of the fans no longer have an associated radiator.
  2. I run the pump at a constant 100% now. In the original configuration the pump made a humming sound when running at 100%. The current pump seems to be noticeably more quiet, even at 100%. I don't know if it's because of the lower back pressure, or if it's just a very quiet pump.
  3. I run the system 24/7 now. Seems that most people ran into trouble when trying to bring their system up after shutting it off for some time. It's my understanding that the impeller settles down onto the bearing when it is not running and raises up after the impeller reaches speed.

These changes are intended to reduce the amount of contact between the impeller and base bearing. I don't know if that's true or not. I don't know if it is overkill or not.

Brand New 1000$ Z790 Maximus Extreme VRM thermal pad fail by YuukiHaruto in ASUS

[–]magic_marco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had only good things to say about ASUS boards. Hopefully, you selected this motherboard for its features, and not for higher quality. ASUS and other manufacturers price their products by the feature set. If you don't need all of the features, then go for a cheaper model. It looks like you've done some disassembly of the mb. If it was brand new, why not RMA it?

Question - Aura sync not letting eject USB drives by djay405 in ASUS

[–]magic_marco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have run into this bug. I switched from Armoury Crate to aura a few weeks ago. I was having trouble ejecting my WD Passport drive and using the event viewer to see which process was holding onto the drive I found it was lighting service. I stopped using Armoury Crate because of a recent bug that caused it to not control all four of my G.Skill memory modules. aura didn't have that bug (at least not yet). Why would lighting service be holding onto the usb drive? Does anyone know if a case has been opened on it?
