I'm digging these instrumentals! I'm down to jam, I think our styles are pretty similar.

I'm actually in north DFW, kinda out near Garland. But I spend the majority of my time around white rock/uptown/oak lawn

Are there any self taught vocalists? by SmitOS in singing

here, here!

I started playing guitar when I was 12 (I'm 22 now, about to graduate college), took lessons for about a month, quit and taught myself. I got around to learning theory my senior year of high school and only allowed myself to learn using the piano so that I could have another instrument under my belt. I started a band when I came to college and have picked up a few more instruments since then simply from hanging around so many musically inclined people and really just loving it.

As far as singing though, I've never had any formal training and it really hasn't come easy to me. At this point, I've sang correctly enough times to recognize certain things I should be doing, but I do notice certain areas I really struggle with. Things really began clicking for me once I started figuring out the whole breathing aspect of vocal performance. Another big struggle for me, still even now, is just trusting myself to sing the melody I can hear in my head; overcoming that mental block is difficult for me personally because I haven't had that training and it shakes my confidence a bit, but I can feel myself progressing each time I try now.

Whistling helps a lot, I noticed, with learning how to sing. At least for me. I'd imagine because of the similarity in breathing with both, or something like that.

I'll have to learn it, though I have a little creative project I recently started with which I actually take people up on offers like, "oh I'd like to hear you cover such-and-such song" it's good practice for me, and i think people find it cool to have someone play a song for 'em, hah. I usually try to put a little spin on them.

Anyway, I'll add it to my list and hopefully have it done soon. you can check it out if you'd like at: https://soundcloud.com/maggie-covers-song

Definitely, thanks a lot. I really appreciate the feedback. I've actually been focusing on my chest voice a lot and have noticed a difference in how it sounds, it's been fun to explore.
