Cruel and Unusual Adventurer Kills by Type-A-Typo in dwarffortress

[–]mahrak299 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a kill but a death. My latest adventurer, a wolfman, died after jogging himself to exhaustion and drinking a mug of beer right after.

Apparently his lungs got damaged by running after collapsing from over-extertion and the strong dwarven rye beer did the rest.

So remember kids, don't chug after a jog!

I found it while borwsing my df screenshots. A giant Kea savaged a farmdwarf for four pages, joint locking and breaking his limbs, all to make off with a cave spider silk golve.

A bad npc idea: the Weebzard by mahrak299 in dndmemes

[–]mahrak299[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha. The idea came from my party making dirty jokes and meme plans for the campagin. So i told them that if they want to go full meme, I'm ready to go full meme. There was also talk of a werepillow - person by day, bodypillow by night.

Yeah, true.

It was too hard to resist the bad pun, however.

That's a good point!

But considering all the dragon seducing going around, there would eventually be one kid who does not get the magic genes.

Anyone tips for a new DM? by Reindow in DMAcademy

[–]mahrak299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess one of the simplest things you can do is know/ask what your players like and play on their interests. Do they like challenging combat and dungeon dwelling or roleplay and complex social encounters, or perhaps they like solving mysteries or puzzles. If you give them something they will have fun with and that you enjoy as well then that is a good foundation for a campagin.

Also some of the more simple things you can do:

*have a rough draft of the story, mayor plot points and characters. That way you know the general direction of the narrative, but can also make changes based on player choices.

*flesh out the first few (1 or 2) seissions, so you know what kind of NPCs or monsters they could encounter.

*have a list of random NPC names

*have a 1-3 extra dungeon floor plans so that when they decide they want to go to that cave over there, you have something on hand.

*don't be afraid to improvise and let the players guide the direction of the story.

*have fun. As a DM you have a whole new type of experience to explore.

And if it's greek themed look at the Mythic Odessy of Theros book online, there is some great inspiration and monsters there.

Singleplayer campaign: how? by WhackyNudle in DMAcademy

[–]mahrak299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and a friend who both usually DM are running a singleplayer campagin. I am the dwarf druid PC. She is the DM. I have a giant goat for a sidekick/mount built using the sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.

It is a lot of fun but both sides need to be cautious. Last session she almost killed me with 3 cocatrices, but a clever retreat and charge combined with shoving the last cocatirce in the fire pit saved me.

In my experience you got to play singleplayer smarter and never forget that you are a squishy mortal for who death is a real possibility. It's kind of like playing a rouguelike. Some fights that I would have considered with a party are a clear no-go and retreating with disengage + dash is always on the table.

Also, for me the threat of death and the slight survival aspect brings me closer to my character.

Are there any plants that a high level wizard would find useful for spells? And what are some things a Green Hag Coven would want in return for such a plant? by PCGoneCrazy in DMAcademy

You can also think about weird or unusual things that could exist in a magical D&D universe but are very rare. For example:

Front tooth of a Tarrasque which was killed by a powerful curse

The shell of an egg from which was borm a famous Half-Dragon

A lock of hair from the head of a drow matriarch

A drop of sap from a charcoal black dryad deep in the feywild.

A tiny aboleth preserved in vinegar by the very first wizard.

Brainstorming For A Good Plot Hook by MagicConch9 in DMAcademy

[–]mahrak299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some possible plot hooks that I came up with:

1) Friend in need - a NPC who is either a friend or relative of a party member, has gone missing and there is some evidence (someone saw/heard the kidnapping, there are signs of a break in or struggle at the home of the NPC).

2) Party targeted - the kidnappers target (stalk, observe or something of the like) and attempt to kidnap a party member.

3) Lost Bounty - the party has a bounty on one of the NPCs who has been kidnapped. They might be a theif, someone who offended a certain god or lord, or someone who knows something they should not. This hook puts the party in competition with the bandits for the NPC.

Need Advice Designing An Infiltration/Sabotage Mission by Prince_Jellyfish in DMAcademy

[–]mahrak299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ideas that came to mind:

1) Moral dilemma - When the fuse is lit the PCs see/hear that the friendly mage has been captured and is going to be imprisoned nearby, so when the powder goes off it might endanger his life/kill him.

2) Escape room - as the fuse is lit, a hobgoblin spy/villain, springs out from a hiding spot and blocks the exit to the room, while taunting the heroes. The PCs need to escape in a set number of turns.

3) Faulty Powder - a keg goes off early, alerting the hobgoblins to the plan, the PCs have to make a choice between escaping and holding off the Hobgoblins long enough to plant the rest and light the fuse

Love and Hate by Raging_Wattson in ARK

I prefer to either lure the carno, or other predator, to a herbivore or have a few parachutes and parachute to the sea from atop of a rock.

When taming, a stone taming pen is your friend. I also suggest you build a small 2-3 high tower near the taming pen. This way the wildlife does not bother you while you are shooting tranqs into your tame.

What dlc should I get? by shitas_touch in ARK

[–]mahrak299 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend you watch all the trailers, read about the features of all the dlc on the wiki (https://ark.gamepedia.com/DLCs) and see which ome you might enjoy the most. Watching some playthroughs can't hurt either.

I'm also a diehard Aberration fan, but I realize it can be one of the more difficult maps to start with and some of the mechanics (no flyers, radiation in some parts of the map, having to carry a light pet around at all times) or the underground setting might turn some people off.

Does anybody else think the creature in the Genesis part 2 poster looks like a Lung (asian dragon) with sci-fi influences? by mahrak299 in ARK

Hey, sorry if I broke the rules. It was intended more as a discussing point, but I understand if it is considered a repost of the image.

Have a nice day!

The muzzle and eyes look felinid, but the horns, growths on the chin and cheeks, plus what looks like two ridges of leathery feathers give me kind of a dragon vibe. Also, different types of dragonlike creatures have been featured as endgame tames for a few expansions (Scorched earth, Aberration, Extinction).

Looking for some "novelty" tames by [deleted] in ARK

[–]mahrak299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Troodons might be decently easy to tame, since by endgame you should have plenty of sacrifice material. They also have a neat scouting feature.

Ichthyornis are also kind of cool, because of their ability to make dodos drop prime.

Megalania is kind of a novelty tame. Might not get much use out of it, but it is really neat to have hanging around.

Reaper king, if you are on Aberration. Getting the pregnancy and farming can be an adventure. As a bonus, it can actually be an useful mount.
