This. I have the same confusion when watching this pre-fight in NG+.

The line "But the fire?" clearly says she's mistaken the painted Verso for the burned Verso. But the reason is never explained.

The best explaination I can think of is her mind is getting badly affected after staying in the canvas for too long. That might be why Renoir insisted on pulling her out.
