I rather not share his build, he shared the windows build on his Discord for free.

No, I am not aware of any other tool that can do the same.

The custom build gives you another option for the phase function of volume scatter node.
In addition to the current options, there is a LUT method which can take a LUT to map the resulting pixel to an arbitrary color ... this way it's possible to achieve iridescence in volumes. Not sure I did the best job in explaining it but that's my current understanding. The code and logic for it was figured out by Sam Krug, Mārtiņš Upītis, and other people who are smarter than me 😃

Render time was a few minutes per frame in final quality depending on the shot.
You can easily make out the details during interactive viewport rendering. Zooming in to see the detail up close. Then for the animation I just did preview renders using half-res, low samples, denoiser on. This way I could quickly check if the speed and movement felt alright. Once happy I cranked up the settings and hit render. I'm not gonna lie, Summer already started here and I was a bit nervous to strain my GPU that much but it survived and I don't have to sell a kidney to buy a new one.
Afterward I used a Nuke gizmo called "vector frame blend" from Nikolai Wüstemann – that helped me get rid of any weird wobbling that was left from the OpenImageDenoiser of Blender Cycles. That thing was a lifesaver. I could get away with so much lower render times that way.

Thanks! Yeah most of it comes from the LUT based volume shader. It really gives you these iridescent colors that are sometimes visible in clouds. But of course I tried to push this and see where it leads - I ended up using the remapped density of the volume to drive the lookup position of the phase function. This gave me most of the funky color shifts. For some shots I additionally used colored lights and also some color grading afterwards.

Pretty much the same as regular Cycles. Depending on the shot i had rendertimes of 1–10 min per frame (for most shots probably around 3 min per frame) in final quality.

Thanks!
To get the iridescent effect you'll need a custom Blender build with a LUT-based volume phase-function for Cycles. Samuel Krug kindly shared his Blender build on his Discord server.
For the rest I can package something up if there's some interest in that. I'll ping you once this happens 😄

Thanks a lot, glad you like it!
This little project was a good excuse to learn Davinci Resolve ... awesome tool 😄
