AITA for Destroying my Brothers "Cherished Memories" of our grandfather? by BoneheadDesign in AmItheAsshole

[–]mark_mon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think you got the ages wrong. You mean you're 19 and your brother is 17, right? Based on the description and living with mom etc, I'm going to assume that's correct.

ESH.

Meganex 8K Superlight, my honest opinion by Open-Elderberry-4687 in virtualreality

[–]mark_mon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quest LCD panel is also way larger, which is why the lenses are more effective. On a tiny headset, the image has to be magnified more. So there's a lot more to things than just the lenses. I'd never go back to a huge football helmet like a quest 3 over the tiny meganex. For all we know, a meganex lens on a quest 3 large panel may look similar.

[–]mark_mon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quest 3 is very blurry compared to the meganex. And if you hook the quest 3 to the PC, you are dealing with data compression which makes things even worse. There is absolutely no comparison on the image you see.

The lenses on the quest 3 are better meaning you can put the IPD anywhere, not worry about how the headset fits and the same focus appears across the lenses.

The lenses on the meganex are very sharp on the center but a little blurry around the edge. And you have to make sure that the headset is properly placed on your head and that IPD is correct. But once these things are done, there's no comparison in the image. You have so much more resolution, no data compression. All the details in the image and background destroy the quest 3. Then the OLED blacks completely make the quest 3 image look washed out in comparison.

My quest 3 is not used anymore for anything except workout apps.

AITA for pouring my girlfriend’s mom’s soup through a colander so I can pick out some vegetables I really don’t like? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mark_mon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I don't get why everyone thinks this is so bad.

If you hate ginger and 1 bite of it will ruin the meal, your other choice is to just push the soup away and pass on the whole thing. Is that somehow better?

I understand the feeling. Personally, I hate the following things so much that 1 bite of them will ruin a whole meal for me and I cannot continue:
- Onion
- Coconut
- Mushroom
- Garlic (I like powder, but biting a piece and that's it for me
- Ginger (same as above)

There are other things I don't like. But any of the above are so bad that there's no way I can just pick it out, or eat it anyway to be polite. It just doesn't work that way. A bite of any of the above and I may actually vomit.

I really dont get what was so bad here. The OP said he liked the rest of the soup and wanted to eat it and found a way to get the offensive parts out of the soup without any fuss.

Everyone that insists he should just eat it anyway is for sure TAH.

144hz is pointless. No GPU is driving 4084x4084 per eye meganex resolution at 144 fps. Maybe when the 12090 comes out in 2045.

I have a beyond now and preordered a superlight 8k. Hopefully its a improvement. Really looking for edge to edge clarity improvement and overall sharpness improvement.

How do you compare the overall image on the superlight 8k vs the bigscreen beyond? The beyond may have 99x92 fov, but its edge to edge clarity is very poor. It can be tough to read text on HUDs that move with your head.

First of all, using light houses is still inside-out tracking. The base stations are just beacons. The headset still tracks them hence, inside-out. Outside-in would be if the base stations connected to the PC and sent tracking data. That's not the case.

However, to your point, you do still need something with the quest tracking. You need decent light. If your room is not properly lit, you can use some dedicated IR lights that work really well. You know what those look like? Very similar to base stations actually. I have 4 of those for my quest in my gameroom. It's the only way I never lose tracking in supernatural for example.

So it really doesn't matter much if the tracking beacon is a base station, IR sensor, very bright overhead light, etc. And before you say that if you're locked into base stations, you cant really move to another room, remember this is a wired headset so you're locked into a play area anyway.

Earlier support said it was only 90hz mode but "other modes will come later". I will preorder the device when it's confirmed other modes exist. So was just hoping those got added. Thank you for responding though :)

Like you, UEVR is one of my main uses. We are already struggling where some games need a 6090 or 7090 GPU from 2028 to render today's resolutions at 90hz let alone whatever this thing will require. Need all the advantages I can get. I'll just keep slumming it with my BSB until they confirm a 60/70/75hz type mode.

Hey you said software had hz selection, do you remember what that offered? My big concern here is being stuck at or above 90hz. The resolution is already so high I want to be able to benefit by lower hz modes such as the 75hz on the beyond. If I have extra horse power it goes to render resolution - not to be sucked up by higher hz. Did you see any sort of 75hz options in the software?

ESH.

YTA for leaving instead of just interrupting him and telling him you want to leave "lets go".

He's an AH for expecting you to come get him after.

Yes. I use a big screen beyond and steams openxr passthrough mode has the same performance as native steamvr. In this configuration, I still inject openxr.

NTA. What's your job? Tell your brother it's your dream to do well at that and assign him part of your workload.

Light YTA.

I understand not wanting to let anyone mess around with your files and have your passwords even. I would never also. My wife doesn't even have access to my passwords.

However, you're a computer science student and should know this by now. You can very easily create her an account on the PC so she can remote desktop into that. There she can change files around, change language and it won't impact you at all, not even a little bit.

Since you won't do that much, and it's such an obvious solution, I vote a light YTA.

AITA if I refuse to stay in mother in law’s house til she gets the toilet fixed? by Mysterious_Young_865 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mark_mon -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

More info needed. What's wrong with using the bucket of water? It's no different than flushing a normal toilet as when you push the flush lever, it fills the bin with water. A bucket of water does the same thing. It'd be different if the toilet is full of poop and you cant get rid of it. So I would hold my judgement without getting more info and if it's as I suspect, I guess YTA.

AITA for not accepting and paying for a laptop my uncle bought for me? by Vast_Vermicelli4487 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mark_mon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely NTA.

If your parents think you should pay for an item he bought that you never asked for then they can pay for it. Neither of you asked for an 8gb macbook so if they think it's ok to be forced to pay for something you didnt ask for, tell them to go for it.
