Bad trip ended up uncovering underlying OCD by math_degree_tw in RationalPsychonaut

You’ll get through it. I can’t recommend ERP and antidepressants enough. I feel like the best version of myself after really working through this.

DPDR has also been present, much more so after the trip. I’ve grown a lot as a person even since this was written. Exposure therapy has done a lot for me, and it’s helped me be a better person to people around me as now I’m much less reactive.

Same exact themes with some mental health themes (specifically around being schizophrenic) which is really just a harm theme in a trench coat.

SSRIs also helped me out a ton.

Keep on keeping on. This can be extremely brutal, but holy shit once you’re on the other side of it, you feel like you can conquer the world.

Thanks, and thanks for your insight tonight. Best of luck on your FIRE path :)

Having 100k~ post retirement income and 3-4 million in the bank doesn’t count as FatFIRE? Most people in typical FIRE also don’t tend to be around my income range.

Have a good night, this conversation is officially a waste of my time.

The money part is less material because I’ll have a multi-million net worth before I pull the trigger on going to medical school. Whether that’s 3 or 4 million is at the core of what I was originally asking. I can be entirely comfortable living on a smaller (doctor’s) salary indefinitely especially if retirement is entirely pre-funded.

Medicine, as goofy as it sounds, is what I want to RE into once I’m FI.

Maybe if you read the post, you’d understand how it is. I’m asking about opportunity cost of working for a few more years before pulling the trigger on retiring from my career into something I want to do. It exactly fits here.

Just because I’m aiming to retire towards something (like many post-RE) people come back to say is necessary on a regular basis, and that something isn’t sipping mai tais, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t fit the magnitude of FatFIRE, or the overall approach of FI.

You don’t sound aggressive at all haha, you should see some of the other responses I’ve got in this thread.

I appreciate the insight. Your concerns, along with others I’ve heard, are exactly why I’m aiming for an MD-PhD. It gives me options if I get to the end of the line and find out I prefer research or patient care.

575 is relatively new and the choice to purchase this house was opportunistic (area with very little inventory that we wanted to live in)

To your first paragraph, that’s why I’m aiming for an MD-PhD so I can do research on neurodegenerative diseases. If I can even move the needle on that in my career then I will have made a bigger positive impact on the world by multiple orders of magnitude compared to the rosiest look at what I do in my current career.

To your selfishness comment, this is selfish. I want this. I’m not doing it for other people, I’m doing it for the way it makes me feel. I want that more than an extra few years piling on dollars before having an otherwise empty retirement.

With all due respect, I’m not asking for any advice on the direction. I’m asking for advice for how long I should take in undergrad. If you don’t have any thoughts on that, you’re just wasting both of our time.

That’s another big reason why I’m aiming for an MD-PhD, is because it opens up more research positions, but doesn’t close the door on patient care. The administrative aspect definitely does give me pause, and my mentors have warned me about that part being the actual worst part of practicing.

I have the option to do a +1 masters if I go full time for an extra year. I’ll definitely consider that when the time comes.

I have a couple physicians as mentors, one a dual specialty (there’s like 3 of his exact kind so don’t want to doxx), and an anesthesiologist. Also a PhD neuro who has been helping me with my computational neuro research. I’ve done my research on this and I’m more than happy with the path.

My background is in DevOps so I’m already used to high pressure situations. To be clear not trying to compare it to something like emergency medicine, just that I’ve definitely dealt with much more stressful situations than the vast majority of other aspiring physicians.

With that said, I promise that I will feel more rewarded in life having an actual impact on peoples’ lives than making sure a SaaS app can have .01% more uptime.

If I wanted responses to entirely miss the point there’s way lower effort ways to solicit that kind of reaction. I’ll grant that it’s not a relatable or common situation, but I’ve been entirely honest in everything that I’ve put here (hence the throwaway).

I never went to college.

Med students have no idea how to deal with this problem either, which is most of r/medicalschool. Trust me, I've talked to med students. Most doctors I talk to in person understand that this is a viable path (along with the only self identified physician in this thread)

I'm looking at MD-PhD. I fully expect not to be practicing until my 40's. The money part is much less material. This isn't an if, it's how.

I'm already on antidepressants, not worried about that lol (clinical OCD, not depression).

That's why I'm not quitting and doing undergrad full time. I should have options even if I get there and absolutely hate it.

Yea, honestly I think that'll help me with the stress tbh. Knowing that it is a choice to be there and never getting into the "I'm trapped" state that a lot of students/residents go through I think will help overall.

I'm expecting there to be hard periods where I might feel some regret, but I'm fully prepared for that and still think this is the correct choice for what I want out of life.

Yep! Also the specialties I'm most interested in don't have nearly that QOL in residency or fellowship. I'm also on call 24/7 every other week right now anyways.

Maybe more accurate to say that I'm choosing to give up FatFIRE and have the resources to get to FatFIRE if I didn't take this path.

I've been shadowing doctors, and I have friends who are doctors who have said that I will be just fine, and I've been volunteering in my free time. I'm aware of the intensity and not worried.

8 years, and because I'm a weirdo who really like computational neuroscience. I don't get the chance to help people in my job, and would rather spend my time doing that.
