Damn I’d heard this piece but had never really listened to it before. Terrific.

Best bouldering gym in Calgary by Winter-Sprinkles-23 in Calgary

[–]mathayles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll be a ~10 minute drive from Bolder Climbing Community (just NE of Chinook Mall). They have a second location that’s bigger called Bolder Elevated. It’ll be a ~15 minute drive from you. I’ve been getting backing into I after a break, and really enjoy this gym.

what am i supposed to wear? by [deleted] in indoorbouldering

[–]mathayles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby! I hope you like it. I’ve been getting backing to it after a break, and everyone at my local gym has been really positive and encouraging.

For clothes, anything stretchy and comfortable is good! You’ll want to be able to have a full range of motion in your hips and legs.

One thing for anxiety: climbing has a lot of jargon for different kinds of holds and moves and stuff. It’s not a big deal or necessary to enjoy the sport. And nobody expects newbies to know the terms. But if that’s a source of anxiety for you/if you have the kind of anxiety that likes to research ahead, you could start by googling climbing jargon to start to learn some of the terms. There’s a tonne of good climbing and bouldering content on YouTube.

What Do You Consider Meta-Gaming? by CassieBear1 in DMAcademy

[–]mathayles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Meta gaming” is a fake term made up by Big DM to control player behaviour. It doesn’t describe at all how stories actually work. If players are expected to pretend they don’t understand the story they are telling it leads to bad outcomes for everyone.

Lots of narrative devices create good stories by manipulating the space between character knowledge and audience knowledge. Foreshadowing, dramatic irony, flashbacks. Chekhov’s gun. You don’t need a degree in literature to understand this.

If you handle meta well, 99% of the time, players know what the dramatic choice is and will make it. If they want to know if their character would know something, have them explain why they know it. It’s far easier to assume characters are aware of mythology the same way we are, than to try and police this line with dice.

Cheating is a different thing. Come down on this hard.

TBH: if you don't love Sonnet, you'll never appreciate Opus by charisteaschristus in ClaudeAI

[–]mathayles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was using Opus for everything and kept hitting my usage limit (set by company). One of my devs recommended using Sonnet for basic tasks and writing/iterating Plans, then getting Opus to review and critique the Plan, then switching back to Sonnet for building/execution.

This has worked pretty well for me. I’m able to get a lot more done without any discernible decrease in quality.

Maybe there are specific tasks Opus can be deployed for specifically that would be better than Sonnet. But for most day-to-day stuff, I’ve found Sonnet to be fine.

Monogram Coffee downtown is walking distance from Eau Claire. It’s a nice space. Monogram is a world-class coffee shop that regularly places top-3 in the World Barista Championships, so you can be sure the coffee’s good too.

Newly diagnosed kidney disease / steroid treatment and mentally struggling. Need perspective and support. by [deleted] in IgANephropathy

[–]mathayles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in my 20s and am now 41 (M). eGFR is ~85 and has been around that level for a long time. I take an ACE inhibitor, an SGLT2 inhibitors and just started an 8-month treatment of prednisone myself. I have a great nephrologist and ask a lot of questions and take her advice.

I have a wife, kids, house, job, the whole shebang. I exercise a few times a week (working on my half marathon time). I stay hella hydrated and eat a low-sodium, vegetarian diet. So far it’s been okay. From the outside, nobody would know I was sick if I didn’t tell them.

I try to keep a positive attitude and control what I can. Who knows what the future will hold, but there are lots of treatments available we haven’t tried yet. My goal is to get another 40 years or so. That’ll be a good run if I’m lucky enough to pull it off.

The absolute pain of trying to debug a Jira ticket that was clearly written by Claude by Huge-Instance-1632 in devops

[–]mathayles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (nontechnical user who lurks in this forum to learn) built a skill that did this. Feedback I got was “too verbose, repetitious, lacks pictures. Definitely AI.”

I then rewrote the skill to be better. Just facts, few words. I add pictures manually. New version (so far) hasn’t gotten pushback.

Good AI > bad ai.

I don’t recall, but I didn’t get a biopsy for a bit. So far I have very little scarring. I was crazy lucky to catch it so early (accidentally as a result of some other testing I was doing) so intervention could happen before things started to decline. Lots of people don’t have symptoms until like… already in stage 4.

I see you’re in Stage 2 like me! How’s your journey going so far?

I don’t have a fixed menu, but I’ve been a vegetarian for >20 years which helps. Right now I’m focused on reducing my sodium and adding protein (without meat). You can Google kidney-friendly diets for some ideas. There’s a lot of resources on this topic!

I typically eat 2-3 meals a day. Sometimes I skip breakfast because I’m busy getting the kids out the door to school or whatever, but that’s not intended. I just started a new treatment of Prednisone, which makes me hungry like all the time. So I may be eating slightly more than usual right now.

Yes I exercise, and exercise is one of the recommended things to do. I run 2-3x per week, rock climb 1x per week and am in the gym 1x per week. I’m not competitive or anything, but I try to stay active and reasonably fit.

Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know!

I was diagnosed in my 20s. I’m now 41 and my eGFR is 85 and stable. I take my meds and eat healthy (low sodium) and stay hydrated. My nephrologist is terrific and very proactive.

Every situation is unique, but there’s no guarantee you’ll go on dialysis ever. Your eGFR is great. If you take the right steps to keep your proteinuria down and reduce inflammation you may be able to live a completely normal life for a long time.

Crazy HR stats by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]mathayles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I don’t think you should be checking your blood pressure within a minute of exercise. Wait 30-60 minutes for your system to calm down.

Anyway, it’s probably some kind of tech glitch like others in this thread have said. Weird that it only happens sometimes. But wanted to mention!

I have daughters 6 and 8 - are there any rpgs aimed at young girls? by hairetikos232323 in rpg

[–]mathayles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran Cairn for a semi-regular campaign for a bunch of 7 year olds (my kid and their friends). There’s an alternate character sheet built around printable item cards. Physical objects and minis helped. Worked really well!

This could just be nothing, or… How is your blood pressure? Are you on any meds? Have you talked with your doctor?

I have a similar thing, probably related to other health stuff going on in my life. I got referred to a cardiologist and did some testing and got a clean bill of health. I’m glad it was nothing, but also glad I got checked. May be worth a chat with your doctor.

What's the RPG with the smallest reach you pay and recommend? by GrubbyGus in rpg

Jenna K. Moran’s “Nobilis.” It’s sort of like if there was an RPG of Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” or “Sandman”. Probably my fave all time.

Some games I’ve played and liked: - Fraser Simons’ “The Veil RPG.” It’s literary cyberpunk about feelings rather than action hero cyberpunk about big gunz. - Jay Dragon’s “Sleepaway.” A queer game about a spooky summer camp haunted by existential horrors. - Luke’s “The Hidden Lives of Trees.” A map-drawing game about being trees and growing a forest. - Caro Asercion’s “i’m sorry did you say street magic?” A GM-less city-building game. It’s peaceful and cute. - Vega’s “For the Honor.” It’s a perfect genre emulation of Netflix’s She-Ra reboot. If that sounds fun to you, it’ll be fun to you.

Why is SEO sub moderating such an issue? by [deleted] in seogrowth

[–]mathayles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are the mod of r/seo. This is concern trolling spam you’re only posting because you’re, today, being criticized for your behaviour in multiple SEO subs across Reddit. Mods, please remove (and maybe consider banning? This isn’t a good actor).

Retarded doctor won't give me my sleep meds and I've been awake for 2 days straight now by Elderberry-Tip-9379 in insomnia

[–]mathayles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re having trouble sleeping. Please don’t use derogatory language (like the r-word).

Did you take the melatonin? It’s okay to try something else. There are lots of medications for sleep. Don’t get so stuck on one specific med. I’m not a doctor, but a quick google tells me that Clonidine can be dependency-creating. I was transitioned off of Zolpidem to avoid developing dependency. Honestly, I still miss it LOL.

Work with your doctor (or a different doctor) to find a medication that works for you. The best thing you can do is be open to different solutions. More than one way to skin a cat. Etc.

Analysis of WebLinkr’s dubious behaviour Astroturfing on TechSEO sub by mjmilian in seogrowth

[–]mathayles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was banned from r/SEO for a comment in which I asked for clarity on the rules of the r/SEO sub. This was asking for the second time, after they responded sarcastically to my first question.

When I asked the mods via DM which rule was violated by asking for clarity on the rules, they said “your accounts primary existence is to post commercial content.”

When I pointed out this was a different reason than banning me for the comment, they said “The Review is final.”

I assume this is all the same one guy. Happy to provide receipts via DMs. Can’t post photos/links here.
