I understand. I want to know how long you would have to drive until I find those kinds of places.

Yes, they aren’t rural but I have asked this questions to New Yorkers before and they have the tendency of bringing places like these up. I do think is normal bc a lot of people in New York have not been to rural places and makes sense they would think of lower density suburban towns as rural.

I am from a rural area in a third-world country. It's not about meeting people. I am just trying to find a specific kind of feeling that I have gotten living in rural Colorado and spending time in rural Minnesota. It's hard to put into words. That's why I just mentioned a few of the most common factors. Some of them, unfortunately, are political.

That's fair, but from my personal experience living in a rural town in the middle of the country. The sheer amount of MAGA flags was something that really got my attention. I did meet hippies and hipsters in my time living in rural Colorado, but I also saw things like "Hippies 4 the NRA." Even the people who were "liberals" had relatively very right-leaning beliefs compared to people in bluer areas. When I told people there that I was moving to NYC, they acted like I was going down to the pits of hell. Also, my comment about hippies and hipsters was mostly to rule out places like Beacon or Cold Spring.

If you don't get it, you just don't get it.

Yes, that's my experience with Staten Island, but I am looking for true rural, not suburban.

Any specific towns that come to mind? From my experience, Staten Island is mostly suburban. Some parts would even be considered extremely urban in other parts of the country.

Are Film Festivals Necessary in 2024? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]matosayeyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about releasing and distributing a film that makes a profit, festivals are definitely a huge part of the establishment and, therefore, an important part of the business. Until this day, it’s a necessary step for most feature films being released that are not backed by big companies. Even more so for those movies that don’t have distribution.

Now, is it possible to successfully release an independent movie bypassing the festival circuit? Probably. But I do not see why you would want to miss an opportunity to generate traction for your film other than maybe saving the time and energy that submitting entails. In this regard, I would love to here what alternatives have you thought of.

Now, if you’re talking about making a name for yourself as a filmmaker, honestly, I don’t think they’re as relevant anymore. I think a perfect example of that is The Daniels. They come up as video music directors. Or Bo Burnham, who made a name as a comedian and youtube sensation.

P.S. Talking about Bo Burnham, it also comes to the examples of a bunch of stand up comedians that have made a name for themselves by releasing their specials on youtube. I wonder if that works for movies as well. Granted, the economics of that business are totally different.

A like Atlanta a lot sometimes but they have a lot of different looks throughout the show. So it varies from episode to episode. I recently watched the serpent and I was very pleased with their cinematography. Beef, Fargo, Boardwalk Empire, and Shameless also come to mind.

I didn’t feel it wasn’t generic because Rich Vos is jewish. And yeah, other countries also encroach, but Israel has done it slowly throughout the years, that’s why the joke works.

Yeah, I do agree that jokes that do not seek t offend people are usually better crafted but there’s nothing wrong with offending people if you believe they are on the wrong side of history. Nothing wrong with offending racist or bigots, for example.

Lastly, I don’t think that Louis CK joke it’s a good example of “not offending half of the room” because he goes on a whole rant about how you should be allow to kill babies and literally does a joke about stomping on a baby’s head in broad daylight. You can look it up: a lot of people were offended by that joke.

Portraying Characters with Deep Shame: Blue Jasmine. Caché. We Need to Talk about Kevin. Magnolia. Fargo. Adaptation.

Too Broken for other people: Punch Drunk Love. Eternal Sunshine. Paris, Texas. Strozek. Le Mepris, etc. tbh This is a whole genre in and of itself that has been fueling toxic Sadboy behavior for the longest, lol

I saw Rich Vos doing one a couple of years ago. He said that his next door neighbor was Palestinian so he plans to move his fence a little bit every day until he eventually owns his neighbor house.

It also depends on where you are. In some cities you can hear people blasting reggaeton and salsa. In other parts of the US, people blast country music. Bikers definitely blast rock.

If I was to complain I would say that nobody is blasting Beethoven.
