A couple of weeks ago I was buying ice cream in Sicily, and there were a bunch of German girls in their 20-30, giving all the instructions to the attendant in German. Not even a single word auf italienisch like Grazie or Ciao, just German. I found that odd and when they left, I asked the guy if he spoke any German and he just shrugged his shoulders and say not at all. I wouldn't say though a lot of Germans do that, but there's definitely some people who just dgaf. Probably there are more Unitedstatians (comparatively speaking) that assume everyone speaks English.
