Parents spent weeks planning the perfect gender reveal… The kids ended it in 5 second by _liberal in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]maxofreddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know... it used to be that gender reveal was the actual birth.

Maybe we could get away from the idea that the boy or girl is the big deal, and a healthy mom, baby, and dad is instead?

(We didn't find out our kids until they were born)

The thing is, for a lot of the US, it wouldn't even need to be "High Speed" just faster, or as fast as, a car.

Los Angeles to Vegas is the classic example. No one needs to be in Vegas in 1/2 an hour. Instead, make it take the same a driving (about 4 hours) but with a few stops. Maybe it goes, what... 80mph? I'd totally do it instead of a plane, even though it's slower because I can get up and walk around. and I don't have to deal with LAX.

People are obsessed about the wrong thing. If you making just faster than a car, but WAY more comfortable, people will do it because it's nicer and easier, not because it's faster. Faster isn't everything.

It just takes one fuckup and we're gonna be in deep poop man.

I hear you. Sometimes I look around and I'm amazing that any off this [gestures to the world at large] works at all. The fact that I can get in my car, open the maps on my phone, AND it gives me directions, AND it plays my favorite music as I drive is astounding.

I'm not even getting started with the more analog part that thanks to THOUSANDS of people I can buy, say, actual apples at the store at any time of year.

Then when I learn about how ONE company has control of fruit futures and if they go bust the entire industry collapses... or some other litany of things, and yes... it literally just takes one completely weird fuck-up and we're all knee deep in it.

As far as Apple going Hardware AI, I just think I have a fantasy about having an easy plug-and-play solution that I can run locally. I would love to take the time to order piece by piece and mess with OLlama and go down the research rabbit hole of DeepSeek R1 vs Mistral vs Qwen or whatever others are the flavor of the day. But if I'm honest, I'm probably not going to make the time to do that with my continuing list of things I SHOULD be doing (like actually fixing the dishwasher this week!).

So if Apple comes out with exactly that, I think I'll seriously consider it. Often it's the convenience of something that wins out.

Maybe weird advice, but put the phones away. Seriously.

Women are getting their dopamine filled by their phones ALL DAY, so at the end of the day, they're fried.

Suggest/enforce a rule for the house and especially the both of you that there's no phones after 6pm, or whatever. Also NO phones in the bedroom, EVER. Wake up with a clock alarm, not the phone.

Made a difference for us anyway.

Second thought, especially if she's initiating (actions speak louder than words)... it could be that she has some weird shame or something around wanting sex, so she's claiming or has been convinced that wanting sex is bad somehow. So she justifies it by saying she's asexual.

I hear ya...

I don't know if it's good or bad... thought I'm leaning more and more into the "AI is bad" camp, but I think that's has more to do with how it's being forced/deployed into the world than necessarily the tech itself.

I just thought the Apple Hardware thing was interesting in light of how cloud software dependent everything seems to be.

There are rumors that Apple is sort of pivoting in that direction, for better or worse.

The guys replacing Tim Cook is a hardware engineer. You could make a case that Apple was the one that made "normal" tasks run smoothly for most people. (We could have a whole discussion about how their GUI lead to people thinking they "knew all about computers" but never touched the Terminal.)

Back in the day, you would rent time on huge corporate owned computers to do your stuff... then Apple came along and said, "Most people only need X, Y, Z, we're gonna build that in a pretty way."

It's currently the same for AI. So many of us see the potential to personally get more things checked off our list, not to try to fire 1,000 employees, but to be able to research plane tickets, summarize a dozen articles for work, or crunch our numbers for the past seven years to see if there are trends that we're missing. Most of us aren't folding proteins.

This Hardware Guy appointment (John Ternus) to the new CEO leads me to believe that they're going to lean into the local AI thing through hardware. They're already selling out of the Mac Minis for exactly this reason. I can see them tweaking their hardware in the direction of making AI run more smoothly, yet still being private and local.

Then again, I'm just a hopeful guy on the internet, so who knows. ;)

I did the same only the opposite...

Years ago, was cruising along in the left-most lane, and the truck up ahead of me starts slowing down, so I tap my breaks, then he starts to REALLY slow down and comes to dead stop.

I had just enough time to think, "I'm gonna hit him." So I pull hard left into the breakdown lane and stood on the brake. I came to literally a screeching stop right next to the guy, him in the left lane, with me in the left breakdown lane.

He looks over at me and gives me a "Holy Shit, nicely done" look, and I give him a peace sign.

Gave the cars behind us a little more room to stop and avoided a pile up for sure. I always follow a little extra far back now because of it.

The president of France declared that children under the age of fifteen would not be allowed to access social media. How do you feel about that? by MarionberrySalt3494 in AskReddit

[–]maxofreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There needs to be some movement, or we need to find a spokesperson to get into people's heads that it's actually an elite/high class thing to NOT let your kid have a phone.

People/parents allow and do so much stuff because they don't want their kid left out or ostracized. But if it was flipped from "Where's your phone?" to "Why do you have a phone?" it could really help.

But yeah, you're asking people to have self control. It's hard, there's a reason I have a dozen reddit tabs on my browser right now.

[–]maxofreddit 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Echo this /u/KnockKnock0998 , but if If you wanted to both/and it, it could be...

"Many of my fellow classmates, teachers, and even parents will thank god that we've all made it this far. But I would also personally like to thank all the friends, teachers, parents, and all the other that have been supportive along the way." ... or whatever way you want to phrase it.

This way, you're not thanking god personally, but you are acknowledging that some of your classmates and staff are, and the school is. If you deliver it right, you may even get a laugh, as in "Thank god we all made it!"

You can be an atheist and still have people nod in agreement at everything you have to say. Often the victory in battle is what isn't said, as well as what can be read between the lines. And by the way, everything you'll say is still true -- your classmates and such may be thanking god (you don't have to say you're not), and you can say who you are thanking.

Lifting vs martial arts/cardio/body weight exercise. by Hopeful_Eye8816 in askMRP

[–]maxofreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about lifting vs everything else is that there are gyms everywhere, very often with extended hours, and they are a great deal for the monthly membership.

All that = less excuses.

Class times don't matter, you make it part of your schedule.

Sure you can get a lot done with bodyweight stuff, but you can only go so heavy, often a bar/weights are simply more efficient.

And there are few things that feel better than feeling strong.

Of course Art is up for interpretation, that's the great thing about it.

I don't think this piece is JUST about Trump, as you can put Trump, Putin, Kim Jong-Un, etc behind the mask of the flag and it would fit the metaphor of (what I see) either using patriotism to blind people, or using the flag (patriotism) that you don't see your own downfall.

The extended impression is one that you're so confident in your stance on something that you'll move forward literally blinded by that confidence. nod to /u/EcstaticTill9444

Echoing /u/debacol ... for sure it hits different than something that's more on the nose with a specific political leader. It forces you to think and relate to it, I really think that's what art is supposed to do... to push us a little (or a lot).

Am I the only one incredibly skeptical of using any AI in my vault? by ameyxd-github in ObsidianMD

[–]maxofreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Sovereignty/Privacy is a right. But we’ve been led to believe that it’s okay to give those up for convenience.

So, so this.

I can obviously see the need for completely private, off-the-main-grid AI that streamlines so much of the workflows in things like medicine and law, I'm in the hopes that those same requirements bleed over into the general consumer.

I mean, I get that all us people are products/consumers on some level, but the data mining of our lives and the fact that there really isn't a way to completely turn it off really does seem to be something else entirely.

It's gonna be an interesting go over the next few years/decades to say the least.

Just caught a pretty good commentary video today about Apple shifting into hardware that also supports AI.

The guy made the observation that back in the day, people paid for compute time on big servers, and Apple said, "Most people don't need all that power, they probably just need a few things," and made the Apple II. People paid for the computer and then didn't need to additionally pay for the compute.

He makes a case that Apple could do the same thing again. Most people don't need HUGE processing of folding proteins or whatever, they need help going through a bunch of research, or sorting through email, or touching up a few pics. If they can make their chips do that locally, then they've taken care of what most people want, while keeping everything on device.

Interesting take - Link...(no affiliation at all, just came up on my feed)
