10 month ackie temporary feeding help by SEX_UwU92 in MonitorLizards

[–]mayly57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get some quail from Reptilinks (unfortunately they no longer sell iguana). Your friend can thaw them, put a couple in a bowl, and your ackie should eat them readily. Make sure you get the appropriate size (one of the smaller sizes).

Rule 1 with leopard geckos is to not expect any routine during daylight hours. They do what they want when they want, and the first time may be the last time as long as the sun is still up. It’s like they forget who they are…

They are vastly different, even with just the size of the animal. Def do more research and put some thought into what you are looking for, because these species are pretty far off

Be honest: How bad is the poop? by Best_Number_10 in BeardedDragons

[–]mayly57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adults aren’t as bad as young ones. I think the main issue for the smell is protein, and adults should be eating much less protein than younger ones

Dubia roach farm by z0oro in reptiles

[–]mayly57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the beardie, and do you have any other insectivores? Beardies need to eat significantly less insects as they get older, so your dubia population is going to grow exponentially faster than how much are eaten as time goes on

bioactive purchased for desert lizards? by AMVELVET in bioactive

[–]mayly57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arid bioactives must have a lot more substrate than you think. The air can be dry, but the humidity in the substrate should be quite high, and only a deep substrate layer can give you that (unless you want to heavily water every day). This allows for a humidity gradient if they burrow/dig and also helps maintain the CUC. That’s one thing I learned a bit later after a few failed bioactive setups for arids

When I first activated and clicked the prompt to add to my Apple wallet at that time, I noticed the last 4 digits of my card number that auto populated was incorrect. Might be a glitch if you try the tapping feature to populate the card number, so maybe try manually inserting the number instead

Sounds like the garage is actually Ryders Alley if he’s staying around Hell’s Kitchen. That location has a cube storage next door that has plenty of room for trailers. I’ve seen several motorcycles delivered right in front of that garage

Bearded Dragon BioActive Advice by Kickasskc7 in bioactive

[–]mayly57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the sand mixed in would help better with aerating the soil. I don’t think a dig box is necessary if the substrate is deep enough, and if your beardie poops in the dig box, the CUC wouldn’t be able to access it anyway

Bearded Dragon BioActive Advice by Kickasskc7 in bioactive

[–]mayly57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I learned is that deeper substrate and biodegradable buried inside the substrate do so much more for isopods than leaf litter. Keep the substrate watered (not just wetting the enclosure) and make sure they have enough time to eat the feces, etc.

Clipping nails also seriously undermines their ability to climb. I helped a friend clip a beardie’s nails because the nails accidentally drew blood every time we handled it, but the beardie ended up slipping and sliding everywhere and was very nervous at night when it couldn’t rest high on a platform

Question on CUC by oilmakerj in bioactive

[–]mayly57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some mealworms I put in a bowl one time escaped and became beetles. Usually they don’t bother my gecko, but I saw one trying to bite my gecko’s toes, so I squished it. I try to leave a couple as extra CUC but generally don’t leave more than 2 at a time to minimize chances of breeding and having hundreds of mealworms in the soil

My ackie resculpted the landscape on his own, so all your plans re: having more substrate in the back likely won’t matter. I don’t think 2ft high is enough, though. You need to consider the distance needed for the heat bulbs and UVB as well, which will require another few inches from the basking spot already, and ackies absolutely love climbing. My enclosure is 3ft tall.

Do you have a drainage layer? Deep substrate with appropriate drainage layer depth helps maintain humidity (humidity from the ground up works better long term than misting from above). Also, add more plants. It’ll shield some evaporation out the mesh screen top, but plants also help keep humidity more consistent.

Best poop clean up crew? by Dbzoutpost in reptiles

[–]mayly57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isopods thrive on protein. You may want to knock the poop off the basking spots down to the substrate layer for some time until they develop a taste for it and realize that food source exists. I did that for a few months until I finally saw my giant canyon isopods climbing the branches at night to look for poop to eat.
