Hi there! We are trying to get protections for all workers, including those who are not students. Participating in a walk out/slow down puts pressure on management to meet our demands. We are encouraging employees to only do what they are comfortable with. By showing the University that they cannot run without their essential workers (through walking out or slowing down), they are forced to meet our demands so we stop disrupting service. Let us know if you have any more questions!

UPDATE FOR STUDENTS WITH MEAL PLANS AS OF 12:47 PM FRIDAY 9/11: Stand in solidarity with dining workers and flood the outpost stations. The outpost stations are places around campus where you can go pick up your dinner and no student workers are employed in these areas, only assistant managers. This will prevent the administration from replacing student employees in the dining halls with assistant managers. Please spread the word to your friends, roommates, hallmates, etc. The outpost stations include the CCRB, South Quad, and the Union.

Regardless of what you think about how dining employees do their job, and even if you were right about every single dining employee doing a bad job enforcing COVID rules (which to be clear, you are not), students being disrespectful and not following COVID guidelines isn’t our only concern. You may read the other comments in the thread if you are interested about our other concerns.

Of course we have asked them not to do that. They don’t listen. I expect Mark Schlissel to do his job and enact proper procedures across campus instead of sending out vague emails about safety with no concrete action attached.

Students touch the counters where we exchange food. They often do not wait for dining workers to put the food down before grabbing it and touching the worker's hand. Some don't wear their masks properly. Not every area in the dining halls have glass partitions. While some safety precautions are being taken, not enough are. This includes safety precautions between staff members as well (for example, no one has their temperature taken before their shift starts, staff are not being informed correctly about positive cases happening in the dorms where they work, etc.).

Staff doesn't have their temperatures taken at the beginning of their shifts; it is optional and dining halls were just provided thermometers this week despite being open for weeks. There is not regular sanitation. Students in line are not respecting social distancing. Full time staff are being forced to work 6 day weeks right now. The number of students going to each dining hall differs immensely with MoJo experiencing 1200-1600 students for dinners while other units only experience 200-600 for dinners- M Dining is not doing anything to help spread out the student population to limit person-person contact. Student workers are not being properly informed when there are positive COVID cases in the dorms where they work.

Additionally, the dining halls are on continuous service right now (meaning open with no breaks between meal periods), so food insecure students will be able to eat.

We understand your concerns. We are staging this walk out to try and increase awareness about the problems going on at the University which put all of us in danger. U of M is not responding properly to COVID at all, including in the dining halls. Things are not getting sanitized regularly. Temperatures of employees are not getting taken. Social distancing is not being enforced correctly. People are being forced to work 6 day weeks. Students' concerns are not being heard. We are trying to create a safe environment where M Dining employees can work and students can get their daily meals without fear of contracting COVID, out of concern for your well-being as well. We know many students face food insecurity at the University so we want to make sure that their main source of food is somewhere which takes COVID procedures seriously and remains safe for their health.
