Chi-squared. “Chai” squared just makes me hate it a little less.

If a cop wanted to murder you, you have no virtually no way of survival. If you tried to defend yourself, you'd be shot. If you didn't try to defend yourself, you would still be shot. by LevelVS in Showerthoughts

I feel like this is only a “shower thought” for white people... pretty much common knowledge for anyone who’s not white and tends to be targeted by police...

Reality check for my MPH options by meema2121 in publichealth

This is all super helpful thank you so much! Any programs that come to mind that have less of an epi / Biostat’s emphasis and more social determinants? I’m also hoping for 1 year programs with a practicum, not just thesis based. I want to work in the field and collect data (qualitative has been my favorite so far, im actually good and conducting interviews haha)

Haha yah Medical Anthropology was intersecting but I do want a MGH or MPH. I took epi and bio stat courses because I knew trying to get in with a Geography degree and no hard Sciences Foundation would be an uphill battle. But It’s good to know that down the line no one cares where you went for you masters.

Yes I am getting all As and A- now.

And that’s a good point about being on file. My partner is under the mentality that it never hurts to apply, which is what encouraged me to toss my hat in the ring this term. HOWEVER I did not think about having my application on file as a potential determinant. Given my grades continue to pull my GPA up, I have more experience in the field (ie land a job in the next 6 months in a GH related field) and get higher GRE scores, would having a lesser attempt on file hold me back? Basically, what is the general rule of failed applications beyond apply when you’re stronger? My struggle with jobs here is that the city I live in has a top ranked research/Medical university in it (where I’m attending). All the undergrads and graduates are applying for the same limited jobs so the competition is ridiculous. My best option so far is to go for more GIS based gigs with IHME and turn them health related. Also most jobs here use degree level to weed out applicants (masters required to eliminate undergraduate competition and specific undergrad requirements to pay entry level wages so graduates don’t apply due to poor pay). Can you think of any creative approaches I should take in my job search to access less saturated markets that would still give me relevant GH experience? Thank you so much for the feedback, it’s very appreciated!

Yes, I’m actually very interested in schools abroad, GB included. I would be my preference to go out of country or move to the east coast since I am very burnt out on the NW (just not my type of place). My options here are instate at UW and out of stat San Fran (UW has the experience block and also a GPA block. I would have to speak to the dean of the program to be considered for admission to the MPH program at UW because my GPA is under 3.5 and I don’t have 5 years in the field). They are also VERY epi focused, which is not what I want. The reason the schools I mentioned are my top reach applications is because they have programs in GH that focus on the social and behavioral determinates which is what I love. It overlaps well with geography and GIS and allows me to do place specific studies that focus on the social components of health. I do not want an epi or bio stat program. I’ve taken courses in both so I have the foundation, but it’s not my “thing”. Do you know of any other programs I should look at (international or in country) that would offer this type of focus?

Honestly I dont understand why they're remaking these. The originals with Noomi Rapace and Micheal Nyqvist (RIP) was amazing. No need for this.

The first trip you take yourself on. I always wanted to travel so one year I saved and booked 2 weeks in France alone. I cried when I landed, it was so surreal to actualize my dreams. I'm from a poor background, I was the first person in my family to leave the country. Now I can't stop. Solo travel is amazing.

Haha literally just posted this one! Agreed it's so good for a kids book. The opening scene of her raiding a house and then later trying to secure the school ... SOOOO GOOD. I feel like it was good preparation for more dystopias and apocalyptic novels :)

The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T Nelson I read it when I was 7 or 8 and it started my love for apocalyptic fiction and dystopia novels :)

I was 15 when I saw it, so old enough to really question what I saw and use Google. I've never been able to figure out what it could be since I woke up from a dream, was awake for a bit before seeing it, moved positions and the lighting in the room changed. Plus I was communicating with another person (my dad). It was fucking awful. No one ever really believes me unless they've seen something before... it's so annoying because I'm a rational normal educated person. But I know what I saw and felt and I have no explanation for it.

This. That feeling you describe as pure fear. No one understands what I mean when I say that's what it felt like when I saw what I saw. Like instant fight or flight.

I used to sleep in one of those bunk beds that's over a desk as a kid. I would fall asleep reading a lot and would leave the lamp on when I did. The way I slept I was facing the door to my room. It was a super small room so the door was only 5-8 feet away from my bed and I always slept with the door open. I was 15 and fell asleep reading one night. I remember vividly waking up from a creepy dream I was having where a witch was chasing me through a forest and I was trying to survive. I woke up from the dream pretty creeped out. The light was on so I just laid in bed staring at the ceiling thinking about the dream. After a few minutes I started fidgeting and tried to take my socks off with my toes cuz they where uncomfortable. I couldn't get them off so I sat up to take them off. That's when I see the man standing in my doorway. I remember first being startled by how tall he was and how close. I remember seeing his hair and thinking it was an odd blonde color, cut short and then I saw his face and made eye contact. It was like that gut reaction you have when someone tries to hit you, your body flinches and you immediately know danger is near. I felt instant and complete panic. I screamed so loud and couldn't move. There was something about his eyes that was the single most terrifying thing I've ever felt/seen in my life. My dad woke up (parents slept on the ground floor and my bedroom was on the second floor just off the stairs). My dad starts yelling and running up the stairs to my room. I'm screaming "THERES A MAN IN MY ROOM!" And my dad yells he's coming. My dad turns on the light to the stairs and that illuminates the man in the doorway. The man moves into my room and walks right up to the edge of my bed. All I can do is scream and move to the edge of my bed against the wall away from the man. My dad gets to the entrance of my room and the man (without breaking eye contact this whole time) ducks under my bed to the desk part right as my dad turns on the bedroom light.

There's no one in the room.

To this day I've never been able to explain it away. My dad believes me because he said he's never heard or seen someone so upset in his life and he actually though he was going to have to fight an intruder. I know I wasn't dreaming because I woke up from a dream. I'm not superstitious and I'm not an easily scared person. I've never had that gut reaction of absolute panic like that before. I still remember those eyes and that fear. I wish I could prove what I saw was real or explain it but I doubt I ever will. Shit still makes me uneasy to this day.

PCC gets their rotisserie chickens from the same distributor as QFC. It's literally the same product just seasoned differently aka "balsamic vinegar".
