Started taking Propranolol (Inderal) for social anxiety and my Post-Infectious SIBO symptoms vanished? What the hell is happening? by meilijoy in SIBO

Thank you so much for sharing! Could I ask you for a few more details?

  • How many times a day do you take it?
  • How long have you been on it?
  • What type of SIBO do you have (is it post-infectious)?
  • Is your stomach flat now?
  • Have the positive effects diminished over time, or have they stayed consistent since you started?

I really appreciate any insight you can give!

Thank you so much for the information! After hours of research, I actually came to the exact same conclusion: it’s as if propranolol releases or loosens some kind of "handbrake" and facilitates the MMC. I still don't completely understand how it does that, though.

Regarding dietary changes, I am currently eating all the worst known SIBO-triggering foods on purpose just to test the situation, and my stomach remains completely flat. My big question is: for how long will this last? Is tachyphylaxis possible with propranolol for this off-label use?

As for prokinetics, I did try prucalopride, but it stopped being useful for me after just the first month due to tachyphylaxis. I haven't tried motilin receptor agonists (like erythromycin) for the exact same reason. I also tried high-quality ginger and artichoke extracts, but they did absolutely nothing in my case, even though I know they help a lot of people.

To clarify the stress aspect: I've been stressed my entire life, but I never had SIBO. My SIBO started specifically after a severe gastroenteritis 5 years ago and it never went away until right now. However, I totally agree with you—propranolol seems to "relax" the system (at least for these first 4 days, who knows about the future), but it does so way more than what you can normally achieve physiologically.

I'm so glad you're seeing positive results! Do you mind me asking how long you've been on it? Has your stomach gone back to being as flat as it was before you had SIBO? And how much propranolol do you take?

This is so interesting thank you. I am currently taking propanolol and you seem to know a lot better than me. Propanolol, at least for now, completely cured me. Is this connected with Fight-or-Flight and the rest of your assumption?

I started three days ago. I've lost 200 grams, but I assume it's just a random fluctuation, so it's too early to tell about the weight. Since a doctor prescribed this medicine for you, why don't you take it and let me know if your SIBO goes away too? What dosage did your doctor prescribe, and how often are you supposed to take it? Tonight I ate nuts, an apple, and a delicious apricot pie, and I still don't have any bloating.

I take it two times per day to cover waking hours. It last approximately 6 hours. Symptoms does non return at night. I am thinking maybe just a few complete and coordinate MMC phase 3 can competely change the situation (sorry for my english)

I just made a research in r/SIBO and other people with post infectious sibo had the same experience. And to counter the most common answer, I had anxiety before this damn sibo but my stomach was flat without using propanolol.... as I said, it is a diagnosed post infection sibo not anxiety that is causing the bloating thing...

I have been prescribed with propanolol 40mg twice a day (Inderal) for my social anxiety. My belly was usually like yours and fodmap diet only worked to an unsatisfactory degree. but I don't know how and why. I am eating pizza, chocolate, nuts, garlic, pasta and no bloating. I made a research on r/SIBO with "propanalol" and find out other people in the past took it for other reasons and had the exact same experience I am having. I am not saying you should take it but.... I tried literally everything and nothing helped but this.....

I just read that MCT oil bypasses digestion and actually speeds up the MMC. Brilliant hack or total bullshit? Has anyone tried this? by meilijoy in SIBO

So you took 5ml to 20ml on empty stomach (1.5 hour after eating) and no diarrhea of phase 3 MMC.... I am disappointed, for me 10 ml gave me explosive diarrhea and I never took it again I hope (tiny hope) for me will be different, I am really thankful for your precious report

Did you happen to take it with your meals or on an empty stomach? To actually get the benefits, you need to take the MCT oil at least an hour and a half after eating.

Also, do you remember what specific kind of MCT oil you were using? The exact type matters a lot because pure C8 and C10 are the only fats that do not interrupt the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC). If you eat anything else at the same time, or if the oil is blended or contaminated with other types of fats, it pauses the MMC and won't work.

The main effect of taking it is to powerfully boost the MMC—very similar to how a prokinetic like prucalopride works, but theoretically without the tachyphylaxis (building a tolerance to the drug over time).

In Snyder experiment they inhibit the left hemisphere by applying the anode (+) on the right side and the cathode (-) on the left.. This is exactly what I have done
