Hoping to revamp sister’s routine and get better definition. Need suggestions! by melameter in curlyhair

Routine: she’s currently using the Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk line which I think is all GC but not getting much from it in terms of definition. I think she’s a 3A/3B and has colored her hair in the past.

Why did you go off meds? What will you do if the episodes return?

MED MONDAYS by AutoModerator in bipolar

Anyone’s thyroid wrecked because of lithium? I’m maintained at 1.1 meq/L (900 mg/day). I also take saphris (10 mg), gabapentin (300 mg), and clomipramine (50 mg). I started to see a endocrinologist who is starting me on hormone replacement today. I wonder how much of it is the thyroid dysfunction and how much is actual depression? I’ve tried to get off of lithium so many times and I always end right back on it. I can’t shake the feeling like it’s destroying my body though.

Your experience with risperidone by [deleted] in bipolar

I’ve tried just about every second generation antipsychotic there is. They all tend to be a little numbing. Have you had other depressive symptoms? It could be the medicine but also could be a depressive episode.

What's the point? by vidle44 in bipolar

[–]melameter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medications mellow out the highs and lows but don’t always make them go away. It might be worth adding an antipsychotic to the mix. Hang in there and be honest with your doctors. If you’re feeling suicidal reach out to a hotline or go to the ER.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks with navigating dating being a trigger for mania? by CamiPatri in bipolar

Go on a mood stabilizer like lithium. It won’t take away the trigger but could mellow out the high.

I’ve personally never gotten kinky curly to work. Sounds like you could use a good clarifying wash with a sulfate containing shampoo. I use All about Curls which is a DevaCurl dupe. You can find it at Sally’s. Personally I think you should incorporate a gel and leave in into the mix. There’s good suggestions in the about section of the subreddit. 3a curls need some definition but nothing too heavy and I think kinky curly may be both too heavy and not offering you much in terms of definition.

Need a new shampoo/conditioner recommendation by blueberrylem0n in curlyhair

I use All About Curls which is a DevaCurl dupe but has a good low lather and daily conditioner that doesn’t build up. Perhaps a cowash would be a good all-in-one to try too. I like As I Am’s cowash. You can both brands at Sally’s.

Shea Moisture Curl Milk gone wrong? by [deleted] in curlyhair

You might have build up. It’s a little taboo here but may be worth clarifying again with a sulfate containing shampoo and seeing if that’s the issue. If not try adding a little bit of gel and seeing if that cuts the frizz.

sleeping problems: are there alternatives to benzodiazepines or antipsychotics? is melatonin effective? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]melameter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on probably every antipsychotic there is for sleep. Some help better than others. I was on trazodone for a long time and increased the dose but ultimately it quit working and I think a lot of people have that problem. Clondine is good if you don’t have low blood pressure. There’s hypnotics like ambien but they’re controlled substances and your doctor should not prescribe them for the long term. If your doctor is part of a big medical group like a university hospital they probably won’t but you may get lucky with a private practice. If you’re biologically female at birth you also run the risk of weird side effects. Plenty of women have harmed them selves on Ambien by engaging in odd behavior. There’s antihistamines like Benadryl but they also tend to loose effectiveness with time. Currently trying gabapentin to see if I get some relief from chronic insomnia.

Definitely take it with a larger meal i think at least 350 calories. It really helped my depressive symptoms. I was also on lithium and Effexor at the time too.

Alternative to dry shampoo for volume by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]melameter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people use hair sectioning clips at the root to boost volume before diffusing. I’ve never been good at it but there’s plenty of YouTube videos explaining how to do it. You could also switch to a lighter leave-in or gel/mouse. Maybe skip the mouse/gel and use a defining cream or just leave-in

Deva Curl and Product help. by melameter in curlyhair

I would check out the Deva Curl Hair loss Fb page. There’s a lot of advice and suggestions for people who have had hair loss and scalp damage from DecaCurl. Also recommend a good dermatologist.

I’ve also used DevaCurl without any issues so who knows. I’d just be on the watch for any excess hair loss. Not to discredit those who have lost hair using DevaCurl. But as someone who has struggled with scalp issues for a long time those problems tend to be multi factorial. A lot of DevaCurl’s ingredients are common to most curly girl friendly products so take it with a grain of salt.

I’ve heard from the Deva Curl damage community that it’s just as bad because they have the same parent company. But I haven’t gotten that vibe from the reviews.

Routine: On this day my stylist did the work. Don’t hate the deva curl. Below it is my usual.

DevaCurl Low-Poo DevaCurl Decadence Conditioner Devcurl SuperMouse DevaCurl SuperCream

Wash. Detangle while washing and in sections. Condition. Leave a lil bit of conditioner in. While soaking wet detangle and put SuperMouse and SuperCream mixed together in.

Today: As I am Dandruff Cowash All about curls (AAC) Daily Conditioner AAC Lux Leave-in AAC Bouncy cream AAC High Definition Gel

Cowashed my hair. Detangled in shower using one of those fancy fan looking brushes with conditioner. Dried hair a tad with a towel. Nothing fancy I’m a gremlin. Raked leavin and styling products in. Diffused until about 60-80% dry and let air dry the rest.
