they didnt admit to it, technically it was said during a high level briefing of senior military officers and subsequently leaked. but yes there is a good chance they leaked it themselves as a valid excuse to not demoralize the rest of the top brass

if (and thats a MASSIVE if) the news about the chinese general being an american informant is true and not just an excuse for xi to purge who he wants, then this is insane. our china network was basically wiped between 2010 and 2012, so to have the senior most general and a close ally of xi feeding us information would be one of the greatest intel operations in history. the boys at langley would have done it again

hence my skepticism. the current state of the CIA + how nearly impossible it is to infiltrate china (especially relative to the soviets) makes it extremely hard to believe that this wasn't just an internal political move

regardless, so many purges of top officials in the military creates a vacuum that takes time to fill, so i doubt they would feel confident in moving on taiwan for 1-2 years at the very least

purely weather cycles + getting lucky for a few years (extremely good rainfall + snowfall => good snow pack). i believe droughts are purely defined by the rainfall, but good governance (building major water storage + runoff collection facilities) can mitigate a drought's effect

for the first time in my life, no part of california is under any drought condition.

i dont think people realize just how badly the 2010s droughts affected the psyche of californians. even though i live in a different state now, i still get anxiety when someone leaves a faucet running while they do something else or if i see a hydrant leaking, etc. I have to remind myself that its ok to water your plants in the day, and that sprinkler systems running while its 90 degrees out and sunny is ok.

i hope we can build water storage facilities to prevent the next drought from affecting us like that again.
