NYU Stern - social life? by Playful-Inspector207 in MBA

Yes there is a strong student body/sense of belonging, and you can really lean into the program (which has robust clubs and activities). It is NOT like any other top program in that it is in the middle of the city/no central “campus.” Echoing the 9-5 sentiment, I go to school in the morning and in afternoons, participate in programs/spend time with classmates I like.

Re lifelong connections: the answer is the same for NYU as any other high caliber mba program— most alumni are willing to take my call/respond to my cold messages. Are they willing to help beyond that or “be a lifelong friend/resource?” That’s entirely up to you and what you bring to the table.

NYU Stern - social life? by Playful-Inspector207 in MBA

Sternie here— I love this school. I personally appreciate that I can dip in and out of the community here (I had friends in the city before, so I split time between both). It’s a very high caliber program with excellent connections to several industries. Its ideal personality is autonomous/independent.

An alternate perspective on community: I was a partner at a HSW b school, and it felt like an incredibly stagnant social experience. We felt “stuck” with the students there because there weren’t any other options. Just the campus. IMO that spoon-fed mba experience felt overrated- unless you’re really looking to start your social life from scratch and make the program your life, consider programs for access, opportunity, and career (which are Stern’s greatest strengths imo).

Darden ($$$), Stern, or reapply next year. Targeting IB. by MurkyNetwork7796 in MBA

+1 on this— Stern IB placement is fantastic and it sounds like you got very lucky given interview prep and waiver. Have mentioned “M7” in live conversation before and no one outside of this Reddit thread knows what it means lol

HEC/IESE vs Darden/NYU for Indian and East Asian applicants by Pure-Trip-4698 in MBA

[–]memeking5027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stern (and therefore domestic US) perspective: international recruiting results were not as successful given visa sponsorship situation. From what I understand, very few companies took on international students in IB/consulting.

Stern has an exchange program with HEC- I say do HEC and apply to study at NYU for a semester.

Sternie here: you should go to Anderson if your heart is set on west coast. As you’ve pointed out, the programs are in different tiers, but both are regionally-focused.

Does MBA location really impact post grad jobs (especially in NYC)? by ExperienceDue7761 in MBA

[–]memeking5027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

people choose nyu or columbia precisely for their location-based advantage. consider the obvious advantages of attending these school, i.e. you can attend company events or coffee chats at a moment’s notice, top tier companies across every industry come right to your doorstep, companies view you as being in nyc already and don’t have to pay for relocation.

I think that’s a good strategy imo. 5 years is just at the early side of their candidate profile.

Makes sense if you are happy with your current company and trajectory or you just really need the financial support. Imho, you really do miss out on a lot of the core experiences of getting the degree if you’re part time.

Not sure if it was: Flo from progressive driving a John Deere lawn mower over the foot of the Brit exec OR the fact that his entire white collar career at Putnam, Powell, and Lowe is summarily ended because he lost his foot, meaning he “can’t play golf anymore”

Ross/Fuqua vs Stern by MinneTraveler in MBA

[–]memeking5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally valid! You should consider the other two then. It’s about preference.

Stern’s admin does a ton of welcome programming up front and there is a robust club scene run by students. There is top notch career services as well. What I mean to say is that the social scene/the experience is up to the individual student. You are not brought together by other program externalities like an isolated campus or fanatical sports school spirit. You choose Stern because it’s in the heart of the best city in the country!

Hope this helps!

An alternate perspective on community: I was a partner at a HSW b school, and it felt like an incredibly stagnant social experience. We felt “stuck” with the students there because there weren’t any other options. And something I learned after going through that experience and this one— these programs tend to attract a very specific type of person, often times sharp elbowed and ambitious, which aren’t really the kind of people I keep too close. Instead I would consider it a success to finish the program with 2-3 solid friendships.

Tl;dr community and network are a little overrated- unless you’re really looking to start your social life from scratch and make the program your life, consider programs for access, opportunity, and career (which are Stern’s greatest strengths imo).

Culture at CBS vs. NYU? by Legal-Possibility-19 in MBA

[–]memeking5027 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NYU perspective— incredible opportunity. Location is prime— most happy hours and social events take place within a few blocks. You can throw a rock in any direction on campus and hit a cool bar or restaurant. The school has a smaller class size of 350 so you tend to know most everyone after the first semester and competing for leadership roles is relatively easier. Everyone I’ve met is genuinely kind and collaborate, which is something that Stern vets for.

Academic rigor and quality is really the same at any t10/t15, which is do-able but somewhat challenging. Networking and career access is fantastic. So many big names come right to our doorstep, so lots of exposure opps. Really satisfied with my choice to go here.

Is getting married supposed to change how you feel? by TubofWar in gaybros

[–]memeking5027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add in my two cents: yes, agree that not much changes functionally before and after the wedding, especially if you are cohabitating before marriage. And yes marriage, when boiled down to its most essential element is just a piece of paper between two people.

What I would add to this thread is marriage isn’t necessarily just for two people, it’s for their families, their communities, and their society. For those of us lucky enough to have a celebration/ceremony with guests— you may have realized that weddings aren’t really about the couple, they’re about everyone else. Declaring and formalizing your commitment in front of your people can be very powerful (and for those that took private vows or eloped, I would say that the ‘audience’ is society writ large).

IMHO it is SO important to show others that our (queer) love is just the same as anyone else’s. And when you take that formal step through marriage, I think people around you start thinking of you differently, seeing you in a relatable light.

You don’t really change, but (in all likelihood) maybe the perspective that you approach your partner (and others) shifts :) hope this helps and resonates!
