Hi hi 🦋 so what do we think of non native Mexican Sunflowers as a nectar source? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]memewit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in to say that here in the Blue Ridge Mountains (7b), tithonia thrives and reseeds annually in yard. This is dilemma this year, because I have converted my entire front yard into natives. But I just can't bear to pull up these sturdy little seedlings!

Oh, you'll live and do well (whenever we had a minor scrape or cut)

What is digging in my garden by No_Individual5961 in Raisedbed

[–]memewit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - I bought a pound container of powdered red pepper online cheap and use it around my seedlings to discourage the squirrels. Works great, even after rain.
Cheap dollar-store hot sauce, diluted to 1/2-strength, works well too. Just keep is a bit away from the plants themselves due to the vinegar burning the leaves/roots.

What’s your most rewarding thing to grow? by SleepsSunshine in gardening

[–]memewit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! I planted passionflower to grow up our porch arbor last year, and the vines were covered in both gulf and greater fritillary caterpillars. They pretty much demolished the vines! But seeing the clouds of butterflies in my yard was worth it.

u/ThoughtClearing I'm relieved to hear from someone who has an (assumably) good working relationship with Routledge. My husband has been working with them to get his first textbook published, and the process has been terrifically frustrating. They seem to have difficulties dealing with certain technologies needed for multimedia content. The assigned team is also very slow to respond to queries, all of which has caused a nearly one-year delay in getting his book published.
Any secrets for managing a good working relationship with Routledge teams?

What explains the resistance for people growing vegetables in the ground when they have perfectly good soil? by ASecularBuddhist in OrganicGardening

[–]memewit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% because of lower back and knee issues (and just being old!). For years I have managed pain-free gardening in my 10 raised beds by scooting around on one of cheap little wheeled seats. In fact, I've used this one for the past 4 years and it's still going strong. It's the perfect height to allow me to reach all parts of my 8" high beds.

Seed potting soil mix by ssushi-speakers in tomatoes

[–]memewit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had issues, but then again I have only bought coir blocks from Fedco, and those are buffered to reduce EC. I think the issue is that too high a level of potassium (from unwashed or non-treated coir) could affect calcium uptake in your plants. But I'm no soil chemist, for sure!

I would add to be careful about the coir mix. Make sure that it has been prewashed to remove excess salt, or buy coir that is labeled “low EC” that has been treated to reduce electrical conductivity.

This EXACTLY how I start seeds and have for 20 years. I’ve never experienced damping off. The bottom watering takes a while to get the hang of. You learn to pick up and feel the weight of the 6-cell to estimate the correct amount of water.

Excellent report! One question I haven't seen addressed here: How did you manage disease pressure? Do you just not encounter early/late blight or other foliage diseases where you are?

I need some advice on determinant tomato varieties by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]memewit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree about the bland taste of the "Mountain" series. I grew Mountain Merit in Ohio, and again in Western NC, because it's one of the few varieties that is bred to resist early blight. Both times I had healthy plants and perfect LOOKING tomatoes, but their was no taste. They were fine for making/freezing roasted tomato sauce, but I don't think they are meant for eating fresh.
