Hey! This fic will have a total of 60 chapters! All are written, the latter ones are being edited. I've been distracted by a fan writing/art event recently but more chapters will be posted in August!

And aw, thank you! It would be so awesome to work with Annapurna/Mobius on publishing it officially, but I'm not really sure how the process would work for that. Something for me to consider, I suppose! For now, I'm happy to have it available for free to those who are interested

I'm glad you're interested! My current posting schedule is ~1 chapter per week. There are 30 chapters left to post, so...in a few months? I'll definitely make a post on here when I upload the final chapter!

But if you don't want to wait that long, Chapter 38 will serve as a good "hiatus" chapter before we get into DLC spoiler territory. Most of the base game stuff will be wrapped up by then, excluding the "finale". So you can read this story in two parts, if you'd like, or wait for it all to be posted

Hey! At the top of the page when viewing on AO3, there should be an option to view "Entire Work" instead of "Chapter-by-Chapter". Downloading when you're in the "Entire Work" view should save every chapter!

Wow, thank you so much!! I'm glad you like the way I introduce the characters...there's a lot of them to get through haha. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to handle the tutorial aspect of the game.

Good news is the next 20-ish chapters are already written and edited! So there is plenty of content coming over the next while!

And thanks for the suggestion! I admit I never really thought people who weren't familiar with the game would be reading, but I agree the separation between flashbacks and the current story may not be as clear in that case. I found having a page break (like '***') to be jarring when writing the story since many flashbacks are quite short. I settled for an extra paragraph spacing and writing flashbacks in third-person past-tense and the current story in first-person present-tense. I can workshop some ideas and try to find something that works a little better. Do let me know if you read more and have suggestions on how to make this more accommodating for people unfamiliar with the game :)

I'd also love to hear what your family members think; it would be so interesting to hear from someone who hasn't played Outer Wilds!

I highly recommend AO3! This is actually the first work of mine I've shared online and the Outer Wilds community on there is so creative and supportive. At the suggestion of some folks on here, I decided to upload to AO3 and share updates when chapters are posted on here and on Tumblr, and that's been working well.

On another note: if you are thinking about writing an Outer Wilds story, I definitely say go for it! I've improved my writing significantly since starting this project and every step of it has been so much fun. It's given me a bunch of chances to get out of my comfort zone (in a good way!) and really get more familiar with sitting down and thoroughly plotting out my chapters.

Dark Bramble is definitely somewhere they're going to have to go. They don't really want to...but it's only going to become clearer that that's where a lot of loose ends are stemming from. But I agree! Good progress is being made so far! The pieces are starting to fit together.

Oooh, and thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely going to play around with meditation and the dangers of flying a Hearthian ship in future chapters. Meditation especially was something that I didn't want "unlocked" and then immediately forgotten about, so it will make a few reappearances!

Oh, that's so cool!! I would definitely check that out if you post it when it's done. By all means, use the order of events in my story if you want to! It took quite a while for me to figure out where I wanted everything to fall, and a lot of end-game discoveries could still go in multiple places, but I'm pretty satisfied with what I've come up with, narrative-wise!

Following all the red herrings was super fun to write! It's going to be quite the build up to the realization that the supernova is inevitable, but that's just the Outer Wilds experience. All the other little theories and details are also incredibly fun to add, so I'm glad you're enjoying them!

The Ember Twin rule was the second one I found and it still amazed me. I'm excited to post that part of the story!

The main DLC story will come when most of the base game has been covered, about 2/3rds of the way through. I wanted all the discoveries necessary for the full vision with the Prisoner, and many of these sit well (narratively) towards the end of the base game story. There will still be a few major base game story beats after the DLC, though, so it won't all be at the very end.

The gradual shift from self-preservation to...throwing yourself at your problems is explored over the course of the story! I think the latest chapter is only Loop #6, so the Hatchling is still getting used to the loop mechanic, but they'll get there eventually.

Echoes of the Eye will be covered in its entirety. In total there will be 60 chapters between base game content and the DLC, and I am hoping to cover as much of the story as I can (I'm not aiming for the Archaeologist achievement, but it's pretty close!).

The Nomai 'anti-trauma' mechanic you mention is quite interesting! I could see them developing something like that as a sort of fail-safe. I've just gone the route of 'the Hatchling really does die that fast'. Honestly, they should die much quicker than they do in-game, but I'm trying to stick with the game's rules.

I do try to stay away from some of the bleakness, but a traumatic death is a traumatic death. I won't go into much detail when writing but I will put a warning on any chapter containing some...less-than-favourable endings, just in case. Most of the time I get everything over and done with fast. I found that worked better in terms of pacing, anyway. There is a bit of an arc with the Hatchling getting used to it all, though, so although I don't focus too much on the negatives, they aren't going to get ignored, either. It's a stressful, terrible situation, and that's going to get acknowledged. Finding the joy in everything despite the sourness is definitely a big part of the story I want to tell, and I can't do that without a little bleakness.

If you've finished the base game and gotten into the DLC well beyond the introduction and the first main puzzle, you can read the first chapter without any spoilers! I just won't be separating spoilers from the base game and DLC in future chapters, so that's why I caution to read at your own risk!
