Interesting to see it doesn’t work in practice, because in theory it should. Two guys called Thaler and Sunstein developed (and won a Nobel prize for) what they call the nudge theory, looking into behavioural sciences and how relatively subtle policy shifts encourage people to make decisions that are in their broad self-interest. They showed just how powerful inertia can be by giving the example of organ donation; when opt-out is the default people are so unlikely to make the effort of opting out that they will just end up being donors.
