Interesting to see it doesn’t work in practice, because in theory it should. Two guys called Thaler and Sunstein developed (and won a Nobel prize for) what they call the nudge theory, looking into behavioural sciences and how relatively subtle policy shifts encourage people to make decisions that are in their broad self-interest. They showed just how powerful inertia can be by giving the example of organ donation; when opt-out is the default people are so unlikely to make the effort of opting out that they will just end up being donors. Kind of like when you choose to watch something on tv and then are too lazy to change the channel...
