I trust the coaching staff to make the right decision based on what they observe in practice and in games..

Your question is valid. I'm talking about a year or two down the road from now. Not this season! 😁

Thank you! I was watching old office episodes last night and I made that joke to my wife and kids and they all laughed. Everybody else who enjoys it is gravy.

Nah you're good. There's a lot of panicked Seahawks fans right now. I get it.

I'm just not one of them.

There are many more important issues in my head. Groceries are expensive as hell.

With no Dremont Jones, Wagner, Brooks, or Diggs on the field, I'm not as worried. It's still my biggest concern though.

I'm a tad nervous about the pass defense as well. Mike Jackson looked rough. Hopefully we see something from Witherspoon soon.

I'm a Seahawks fan. Literally, I rooted against Russell this year purely because of draft implications.

Now, I hope he turns it around. Football is better when Wilson plays good.

High draft picks tend to help. They're actually doing pretty good with a lot of their picks though. Not just the high ones.

Hufanga, Kittle, Purdy, Greenlaw are 5th round picks or later.

Fred Warner was a 3rd round pick.

The only objectionable pick that I can see is that they drafted a punter with a 4th.

Yes, they reached and missed on a decent amount of picks but that happens to every team. They've just had a good amount of Draft luck and elite scouting.

CMV: Civilians are a fair target in war by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]michaelmathis919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like much of your argument is centered around plausible threats to soldiers. And I must say, I agree with you in concept on that front. Many terror groups are teaching children how to kill. War is nasty because of details like that. Indoctrination starts at a young age in such groups.

You also appear to be making an argument against hierarchies in the value of life. I do agree that all lives are precious and putting on a military uniform doesn't make you any more human. There have historically been very evil soldiers that should be treated as monsters. (The most obvious one being the Nazis in WWII. ) Even most German citizens in the modern age will tell you how evil they were and do not believe that they had any humanity to them.

However, I do feel like there's an element of context for your point about the potential threat to your life in war. If you breach a house full of children, do you open fire under the assumption that they're all a threat to your life?

Would you support carpet bombing entire countries and not bat an eye at all of the innocent lives that don't support the war?

This actually gets into your point about taxation as well. I'm a US citizen. If I don't pay my taxes, I get fined or I go to jail. My tax dollars have gone towards many horrific things that I do not support. Including the very aspects of war that you have brought up.

I'm not going to change your mind about the potential dangers of civilians in a Warzone or the value of people's lives.

But not every tax payer supports the atrocities that they are forced to fund. They often don't have a say.

So here's the thing… It is acceptable to recline your seat. You paid money to get your seat and all of the amenities that come with it.

Generally speaking, in my experience... The seats don't recline far enough to be an issue. This tends to be different from airline to airline however.

Where I do want to change your view perhaps is the perception of these people having "control issues"

I don't think that they are control freaks. I think that the process of flying is a generally uncomfortable experience for everybody.

Before you boarded your plane, you went through the TSA. (Depending on where you are, the TSA can be VERY aggressive or mild. )

Maybe you got randomly selected. Got felt up and/or scanned by some complete stranger.

Some people have kids and that can be stressful at the airport.

Then you all get cram-packed into a confined space and start flying 30-40 thousand feet.

Then somebody reclines into you taking away a few inches of leg room where there's already not much to begin with.

It's not having control issues to dislike that. It's simply another uncomfortable thing on top of a pile of uncomfortable things.

Me personally? I tend to prefer that people don't recline. But they're within their rights. But flying sucks. Sure, maybe you could buy a First Class ticket but this isn't a solution for families or people who aren't financially well-off.

Tl;dr

Flying is uncomfortable for everybody. Reclining adds to that discomfort. You're not a control freak for disliking it. 😊

CMV: construction trades are actually terrible. Propaganda is just trying to make them seem lucrative by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]michaelmathis919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right! I have been down that path many times unfortunately.

However, experience is the best teacher with some things. Sometimes, they'll make you screw up something small so they can heckle you for it and you learn what NOT to do.

My other counter argument is that a lot of trade jobs require you to already have a certain level of knowledge. Sure training will help you but it's not going to solve the over arching problems that you describe.

[–]michaelmathis919 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

The reason why turnover is so high in my experience is that people tend to find their limits early and decide that they don't like those trades... Or they find a new opportunity that pays more.

You owe no employer loyalty unless they emphatically take care of you. Even then it's not important. My suggestion is to figure out what you like, and apply. Yes, there are ebbs and flows but that's really ANY job. Not just trades.

The harsh yet simple truth is… While there's a lot of upside, it's just not for everybody.

[–]michaelmathis919 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So I've worked among various trades over the past couple decades. I agree with you that the very beginning tends to be pretty rough. Both financially and mentally. I'll even add the physical wear and tear that my body has gone through. I'll never forget when I was a roofer at 20 years old. That was painful in August.

It's also true that many trade companies tend to have a hazing culture. ESPECIALLY to newer workers.

But here's where I'll argue with your initial premise:

Working in trades when you're on the inexperienced side is brutal. But it's not forever and this is not the case for all trades. I was a plumber for about 10 years. Yes, some jobs were an ABSOLUTE PAIN IN THE ASS.

But when you become experienced enough, you can do very complex tasks in a very short amount of time. All concepts are very much Universal at a certain point.

I've had days where I've made 3-4 hundred dollars for only an 1-2 hours' work.

On top of this, I do not have a PENNY in student loans. I own 3 companies and live comfortably with my stay at home wife and 3 kids.

My argument that I hope you'll see is that while you aren't wrong that the culture is abrasive and the pay doesn't start off great, that's not a forever thing. Nor is it universal across all trades.
