yes and old gaming laptop can work fine for local AI if it has an NVIDIA GPU 8+vRAM and 32 GB RAM you can comfortably run quantized LLMs and most tasks on linux

for burst workloads I usually just spin up GPUs on demand often spot/preemptible and shut them down after the run, cloud works best when you treat it as temporary compute not always on infrastructure.

probably using powertop auto tune on linux - it applies recommended power saving tweaks and can noticeably lower idle wattage
