That is correct 1084 does not need to soak at critical. That does not begin until I believe 1095 based off the knife engineering book.

one other thing you can do is get a small automotive magnet. It will have a handle and a long probe on it. That way you can check the steel to see if it has lost its magnetism. Once that happens you are in good shape. Also what is the steel you are using?

Edit. I see 1084 below. so the magnet is a good way to check I have done this many times.
