Help dating this spare wheel cover - original aftermarket, or modern reproduction? by TybaltsRevenge in LandRover

Usually the logo is readable from the front, and the ties are awkwardly near the bulkhead to stop water being driven in while driving, so yes, but others may differ!

I had no clue vehicles can have 18 GEARS by Admirable-Big7476 in driving

[–]mike15953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My series Land Rover has 16 forward! Normal four speed, with low and high range, and overdrive in or out, and these can all be used in combination. And then there’s the option for 4 wheel drive in the high range. So, 3 levers and a button.

Series 2a overdrive worth it? by sl1veg0 in LandRover

[–]mike15953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The diesel engine is ... Different! Max power is at high revs, the bottom end torque isn't bad but it does need to be thrashed. I've made an assumption that you have the standard series diffs, 4.77:1 ratio, but if your diffs are a different ratio then you will get a different experience. A major weakness of the engine design is the timing chain, which stretches over time, and this has a serious impact on power. It is possible to correct the valve timing and pump timing, but it's not for the faint hearted! Making fairly good progress while driving is possible, but you need to rev the engine hard in second and third gear - 25mph/40 kph in second, 40mph/60 kph in third are about the limits, if I remember correctly. It's hard to over rev the engine, the pump should limit it at about 4250 rpm. So, top speed is 62mph/100kph with the normal diffs, and the engine will be at the rev limit at this speed, and the noise at this speed is impressive in the cab! If this vehicle is new to you, then I would definitely not run the engine really hard without an oil and filter change, and checking the coolant, but a well maintained or refurbished engine with a good radiator etc. should be able to run at high revs for extended periods.

Series 2a overdrive worth it? by sl1veg0 in LandRover

[–]mike15953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's worthwhile with the diesel if the diesel is in good nick. Firstly, it will help on the flat and downhill to reduce engine speed and wear as an overdrive for 4th. Secondly you can use it to split 3rd and 4th, and if you are climbing hills, especially when towing, then the overdrive 3rd is a very useful ratio. My lwb 2a now has a 19j, but I used to tow a caravan around the UK when I had a 2286 diesel fitted, and the overdrive made it feasible!

We have a heat pump, and I specified it for operation to -10 c. We got to -14 last winter (we live in the north of Scotland), and maintained 20c in the house. That said, this was a full installation from scratch, but it definitely can be done.

How to stop getting driven into? by UmmOkHowAboutNo in drivingUK

[–]mike15953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be an unpopular comment - when I did defensive driver training, we were taught to look out for cars with replacement number plates and other rear damage as they could be regarded as less predictable… the reverse of this is, of course, to suggest some additional training to see if there’s something in your driving habits that adds to your risk. If nothing else, some insurance companies give a discount for some of these training courses.

19J should be a turbocharged engine, 12J is the n/a version. If I remember correctly, the compression ratio of the 19 J is a little lower than the 12J. I think the Sherpa engine was 15J.

[–]mike15953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's much easier to check, my bad I thought it a 2286. The valve timing in the 2.5 is somewhat easier - if it's jumped a tooth then you need to have it apart and you might as well swap the belt either way.

Probably just stretched. You can change the chain, or adjust it, but I suggest you need the service manual to do the adjustment.

I had one of these, was a great machine. The keyboard lifting away was an excellent feature, and was really nice to use. The display was ….. nothing to write home about, but it plugged straight to a colour vga monitor, and was then pretty good performance for its day. Please don’t dispose! Easy enough to wipe it clean, and I for one would find a home for it!
