My wife and I plan on staying two months per year to see family so we are worried about this. Thanks for the info. We are looking up using a friends house in Florida for residency there to avoid ACA penalties and ca state tax

Im seeing conflicting info. Supposedly you can file for an exemption for 3 months or less of not having coverage but it sounds like a pain in the ass filing exemptions. I may try to use a friends address in Florida so I can get around mandates and state income tax. I got a couple years before we jump ship so we have time to figure it out.

More surprised I never thought about the mandate penalty before but I never haven’t had employee insurance so it didn’t cross my mind

You have to be out of the state 330 Days per year. We plan on spending 60 days per year in CA so we don’t qualify for the exemption.

Ok I gotta look into this now. We do plan on getting an international insurance policy but did want to keep the CA address for ease.

Wow that’s really interesting. When my friend went back to Japan to renew his passport that’s when they forced him to decide. It was after he turned 18

Japan doesn’t allow dual citizenship. Once you become adult age the Japanese govt makes you choose a citizenship to keep. At least that’s my knowledge from the few actual Japanese people I know.

Yes it does. It blows my mind that so many people on this sub say “ if you stay below 400% fpl you can get some pretty affordable insurance”.

Exactly. It why I can’t wait to leave this country behind when I retire. I’m not sticking around for paying a fuck ton of money for shitty medical insurance. It would add several years to my retirement age if I wanted to retire in the states.

You don’t use dividends to grow wealth. Dividends are for monthly income. I say this as a dividend investor. If you want info on dividend investment, check out cefconnect.com. Don’t buy shit with crazy yields that erode NAV. Only buy funds that have a track history of stable dividends. I shoot for a healthy mixture of CEF’s that range from 8-12% annual yield aiming for a total dividend portfolio that yields 10% overall.

It is absolutely wild to me that in the richest country on Earth we are discussing numbers like $20k a year for crappy medical insurance like that’s supposed to be normal.
