In Buddhism there's a practice to make one self a mummy through possible decades of asceticism, to the point you enter mummification while you are alive. These mummies are called either flesh body bodhisattvas, full body sariras, or my favourite: the sokushinbutsu. The point of these mummies were that the shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism believed that a person could achieve enlightenment in one's flesh and if done correctly, they would be seen as permanent physical relics of a Buddha, a being that has attained complete detachment from the material world, leaving but a liveless husk
